MPEG1 Encoder ?

How does the MPEG1 encoder with Toast compare with what's available elsewhere? (ffmpegx, Missing Mpeg Tools, etc.

the mpeg encoder for toast is slow... S L O W. However, you get the best results. You have easy options on the Qucktime export menu. You can choose NTSC or PAL and how you want the video to be resized/cropped. Furthermore, your source can be of any framerate and it will automatically change the framerate to a standard one with ZERO loss in sync. THis is highly recommended if you have lots of time, and dont mind your processor being ate up for awhile.

There are two in ffmpeg, one being ffmpeg, and the other being mpeg2enc.

Mpeg2enc [which is the same program found in MMT] is decent for speed, however, it is NOT recommended to use it for converting source files with a non-standard framerate. You can get some pretty high quality stuff using this encoder though [better than Toast] and it is highly recommended.

ffmpeg is fast. crazy fast. sometimes faster than realtime fast. You can encode at any frame rate and the results are generally good. However, SOME vcd and dvd players cannot play back MPEG streams created using ffmpeg. Moreover, occassionally even QUICKTIME cannot play back these streams. You can also encode at any resolution.
