Exactly, travelling is just abroad is just not within most peoples means. I'd have to scrap every penny for a year to do it, and I just KNOW it will be ruined the next time a nifty new CPU comes out.
The US is very large and there is alot to see here, heck I've only been to the surrounding states my entire life and if I made a list of places I'd like to go half of them would be here in the US.

ok, i just want to clarify this:
The furniture from that period, or imitating furniture from that period is called "victorian" furniture, but you don't refer to that period of history as the victorian times, right? You wouldn't say "my great grandfather was in government back in the victorian times" ? would you?
-
Yes Hawaii can be quite a trip, and I doubt most people view it as a "weekend spot" but more as a vaction spot because of that. Oh well I promise to come visit Europe soon as the whole lottery plan of mine pays off... meaning maybe tomarrow maybe never, we'll have to wait and see.

I really enjoyed reading everyone's replies on their views of "Americans". I was talking to my wife about this post last night. We are both Native Missourian's that in the last few years moved to Michigan and then finally to Texas.
We have both done a fair amount of traveling, however, all within the continental US. There has been talk about traveling "abroad", but nothing concrete (got a 2.5 year old).
I have always had an interest in learning about other peoples' ideas and ways of thinking. I have my set of values and ways of looking at things and it is interesting to hear someone elses viewpoints, not that I would agree or disagree, but you can find out what made them think the way they do.
On the of the earlier posters mentioned that Americans are being looked at poorly (paraphrasing) because of George's actions with Iraq. What about George's decisions/actions gives y'all that opinion. Do y'all sum up Americans by the actions of their leaders?
In gradeschool, they taught americans that we are the best nation since we are free (taxes), have the right to worship who we want, etc. etc. What types of things did they teach other folks. Obviously, teachers did not tell there students, "Now, Will, We are the 2nd greatest nation in the world because them American SOB's
have free will".
Actually, I have been dying to ask another question and get some feedback on this. During the Clinton days and the Monico episode, what did y'all think of that? On a news report, "they" said that everyone in Europe thought it was stupid that we were making a big deal out of the "incident".
I know this has gotten way off topic and who knows it should be moved there, but I (and it appears others) have a genuine interest in learning about other folks.
To the one poster, THE SOUTH WILL RISE UP AGAIN!!!!!!!

Americans for the most part are great especially when you get away from the usual tourist traps (Disneyland, L.A.). They will generally do everything they possibly can just to be around you because they are so fascinated by this 'strange talking fellow' (exact quote from one guy).
Like in one small town we pulled into when we were travelling the states. My Grandpa had come to the same supermarket a decade ago but when we went in they still remembered him and treated us like best friends helping us with our shopping and directions.
The reason I think they are so ignorant when it comes to other nationalities is because they are never taught it in school. When we go through school at least once a year we had to do a project on another country.
As for the Clinton/Lewinski scandal I don't really see why you all made such a deal out of it. If it happened in Australia (which it wouldn't to our prime minister, little Johnny Howard) then we would have probably given him a pat on the back for getting some. I guess we are just more laid back when it comes to stuff like that.

Pacman,
This is not to be critical. You have made a VERY big point. The Monica scandal was just the Republicans trying to "get" the "opposition's" president thrown out.
Not unlike the brou-ha-ha with the prior George Bush. Of course, at that time, he was able to start Gulf War 1, to take the nation's mind off the problems with Nicauragua, and financing the death squads down there. Funny, not a word said since. In fact, the records have been sealed for another 50 years..
And, our present pres has sealed more records, tho' they were supposed to be released shortly after he got into office.
Hey, you do talk funny, I've seen the Dundee movies. And WW2 movies. Of course my favorite is Quigley Down Under, but I am into guns, and do like Tom Selleck.
We do not teach enough in our schools. The world revolves around the USA, and any other place is just not worth bothering with.
Prasanna,
It really doesn't matter how much an American, or a Hindu, or a Russian eats. If you are hungry, it is not up to the "authorities" to say you are eating too much. If we are a fat people, we have paid for it, and are paying for it in early deaths. I know you mention this above, they paid for it, so who is to say they shouldn't eat as much as they can afford. Not to be offensive, but is every Indian skinny; is it a nation of Ascetics, or is it a nation in which many people do not have enough to eat? I do know there are a LOT of nations that would like to have more to eat.
About 15 years ago, a friend, about to retire booked a trip to Australia. It was over 15 thousand dollars, probably 25,000 today. It IS halfway around the world. Understandable.
I have been all over the Caribbean, and all over the Med, all with the Navy. I have seen all I wish of the world. I enjoyed them all, but don't think I really want to go back. I did enjoy those countries.
Flanina,
Actually we do call it the Victorian Era, as we do Edwardian Times, Elizabethan, etc.
The US is fascinated with all things British, even today. We were even enamored with the Iron Maiden, tho we do not seem to like Tony Blair so much.
Does anyone wish to see what we call Victorian, Elizabethan, Edwardian?
Cheers,
George

Lordsmurf,
The problem is Texans seem to be as little more gullible than the rest of us.
I hear so much of the lone Star State being "tough on crime," We have "executed" more murderers on Death Row than any other state. Of course most of them are of Mexican, or Black descent. Whites don't commit crimes in the Lone Star State.
One of the big problems is recent reports have said that GW's backup did not tell him there was any problem with the convictions/death orders, they just gave him the papers, said sign, here, he signed, a man died, DNA evidence later said the dead were not the guilty party. Hey, God can sort 'em out.
Hey, your ex-gov or no, he IS a lite weight, absolutely not the brightest bulb on the tree.
Does how many people you execute make you a great leader? Then, why do we condemn Pol Pot, Stalin, Mao Tse Tung, even Idi Amin and Causescu.
Why do we condemn the former governor of Illinois for, as his last act before leaving the governor's office, commuting the death sentences of all on Death Row to Life, instead?
Killing those we have in captivity does not seem to be any more than retribution, and in many cases, mistakenly so..
Of course GW does the same today, they give him a paper, tell him to sign or not, we know what is best; we are just a little bit smarter than the whole Bush family, in toto. And, there is money to be made.
I hope this is not too offensive to Texans, but it is true.
Cheers,
George

Ok this is derailing into the wrong direction. Lets not start throwing around insults even in a generalized manner in whats been a very friendly thread.
@Gmatov I'm not a big bush fan but I give the guy more credit then most do, if you want to read a very interesting artical on the guy PM me for it, but I wont turn this into a politics thread/flame, which your comments are threating to do very quickly.

Glad I ain't a mod, I'd probably shut this one down for off topic
CRAP,
I am not a Texan but I lived and worked in Texas for about 10yrs off and on in the last 25. Texans are no different than any other person from any other state, they just talk slower! Possibly because they put a bit more thought into what they are saying! More thought = less foot
I personaly HATE the term American! I am a UNITED STATESICAN!
America is not the United States alone! It includes Canada, Mexico TOO on the north contenant and Brazil (and others) on South America too. Don't forget the many others like Panama (you know the one with the canal) in between! They are ALL Americans too, but have NOTHING to do with the United States! Canadian, Mexican, UNITED STATESICAN
I love my country and proud of it, but with all the political correct crap lets at least get our name correct!!!
I for one would love to visit other countries, not tourist traps though! My Mother has been to Italy, I have relatives living in England, and friends that live in Germany now. I have been to 44 of 50 States, I have not even seen all of my own country yet! That's much more than most people I know have been to though.
As for people from other countries coming to mine, I welcome you.
When I meet people from other countries I will glady answer questions about mine. BUT, I talk and ask about yours! Your here and can see mine, I may never get to yours. I ask questions like what's your weather like, hows your roads, speed limits types of houses and cars, land, prices, and anything else that come to mind for that country and people.
Most people I have met tell me one of our states is as big as thier whole country just about. Or that we could fit several europe countries into just Texas or Alaska! It is really sad sometimes that I am talking to a foriener that will know more about my country than most of the people I know that were born here!
Many visiters I have met have never been to Texas and yet they ask questions about things they know about the state. Many people I know here still think Texas is all desert
Texas should be at least 3 states, west Texas desert, South Texas coastal (Gulf of mexico, like an ocean), and East Texas Piney woods (forests, lakes, paper mills and pine trees). Did I leave anything out.
As for food? Most of what we see depicted in history are FAT people!
Don't know if it's true but look at many paintings and the way Kings and other rulers are portrayed. CHUNKY or FAT, not thin and trim!
Though Most of the Chinese and Japanese people I know personally are short and thin, Sumo wrestlers are large and FAT. Course I know some of averge size and shape also.
Super size is just a marketing ploy to get stupid consumers to buy more just like "EXTRA VAULE MEAL". Sorry, but there is NO extra value in paying $4 for a 50cent burger, 25cent soda, and maybe one potatoe cut into strips! ABout $1 or less to make yourself, I missed the part about VALUE at $4, sorry not me!
Did you know the same burger patties are used for a double cheese burger for $1 and a Big Mac for $2? SO you trade off a piece of cheese for half a bun and some spicey mayonaise and pay a buck more (at least)!
And That's not even a tourist trap! Some of the same people that pay those prices here for that garbage will go to the tourist traps in Italy, France, England ect... then come home and gripe about how much stuff costs!
-
Hope I get the last post before it's locked

Sure he may not be the brightest president around but I personally like Bush. But enough politics for me.
Hey, you do talk funny, I've seen the Dundee movies. And WW2 movies. Of course my favorite is Quigley Down Under, but I am into guns, and do like Tom Selleck.
If you are looking for a good Australian war movie check out Gallipoli. It stars a young Mel Gibson and directed by Philip Noyce.

Now, some of you guys are getting heated unneccessarily. I should have sprinkled smileys about, liberally.
Pacman,
Your accents and pronunciations, words in general are amusing to others, not so much your actual speech, I don't recall hearing much of it on TV, more that which we get from movies and the like. I don't know how much of that is close to your real speech patterns.
Face it, when a bunch of American film makers go to shoot on site in Australia, they have the majors in the cast already hired, take them there, hire the "extras" and try to get the stars to speak "Australian".
We're fed what they think we want to hear, so I don't really know how close the speech patterns, words, etc., follow yours, and, even then, "yours" is probably one of half a dozen, what should I call them, "argots"(?), as it is a big continent.
You would probably detect a native's home by his speech pattern, "Oh, you must be from around Sydney."
Just as, here, we have probably a dozen regional dialects, all American English, as differentiated from British English, and we'd do the same.
I wasn't making fun of your "language", that's why I said I'd seen all the Dundee movies, pure entertainment. Of course I don't think that was a film that would have been shown in schools to help the kids to learn how to "be" Australians.
Which of the films is the "all erroneous" one? Dundee, I would bet. I think the Quigley film was an actual portrayal of part of your history, just as we wiped out the Natives here because we could make more "efficient" use of the land, and because we wanted it, period. Hey, every nation in the world has done that, and it's still going on today.
Mcleod,
I should have used those earlier. I wasn't jagging you, I was more like ribbing you, specially the Yanks-Yankees.
Bush is as much my pres as yours, as the Reps will have you know. He was elected, no matter how, nor how closely.
I heard many people, in Clinton's time, say "He's not MY president." Well, bullshit. The man who holds the office is pres to all. Rush Limbaugh spent 8 years teling you that Clinton was not HIS pres, but now you are a disloyal SOB if you say that about the Rep in the seat.
Clinton was being investigated over Whitewater, not over getting his knob polished by a slut. They couldn't nail him on that, so they got him for saying he didn't have sex with her. That was the only charge they could make stick, not in the original investigation, brought up when the Republican witch hunters were desperate, and he's found guilty of perjury. Not lying about Whitewater, saying he did not "have sex" with her. No damn wonder the rest of the world thought us a laughingstock.
Overload,
Should have had more of these. They're cheap, mebbe would do some defusing.
I have no quarrel with anyone, no matter where they're from..
Hey, the official name of our country is the United States of America. So, for short, and, I think, ever since King George quit calling us "Those Rebels", the English have called us Americans. If they could accept that, I don't know why we, or you, can't.
Canadians don't call themselves Americans, nor Mexicans, nor Panamanians. I think they have pride in their heritage, and a Canadian who lives on the other side of the street in a town split by a border probably doesn't say "I'm almost American". I think he's more likely to be proud to be Canadian.
I think we're the only country on Earth who love to beat up on ourselves. I don't know why we are so miserable and guilt ridden. And politically correct? Jeez!! When you have an all girls school that outlaws the word she, and her, because the students may be hetero-, homo-, or bi-sexual, and the word is possibly offensive to one or the other, I think we have gone overboard. (This is true, BTW, not made up.)
Throughout history mankind has struggled to get enough food to survive. Until modern times, there has never been enough for everyone to have all they wanted to eat. And, Reubenesque has been the ideal feminine form till the latter part of the last century, when the Twiggy fashion came in. TV and film have been a major contributor to this.
Look at talkies and photos from the early 20th century. The women, and the men, were on the portly side, successful people who had enough to eat, and by God, I'm gonna eat.
And, you're right, "supersize it!!!". With potatoes at a nickle a pound, and a buck 29 for 5 ounces of fries, if I give you 2 more ounces for a lousy 20 cents, aren't you gonna go for the "bargain"? And, to me, it's 20 cents of almost pure profit, incremental sales.
You can always not finish it, except, if you're from my generation, you were told you had to clean your plate, "There are millions of children in China, Russia, Africa, wherever who are starving.". Also, "Take all you want, but eat all you take.". That from Boot Camp, where you left food on your tray, you would lick it clean when you tried to scrape it into the garbage.
Have to hunt the thread this was split from. Some things are taken out of context, some just missed the "humour" I had intended. Ah, well. No big deal. Just wish you guys, some of you, weren't so thin skinned.
Cheers,
George

Bush is a good guy and there is no evil plot for oil. Yes, he is not the best impromptu speaker, but his speeches are delivered well and his heart is in the right place. He often gets teary and emotional when he hears of tragedy. I would HATE to see what would have happened after Sept 11 if old (I invented the internet - GORE) had won. OK nuff said.
Almost all of my favorite music bands are from the UK. You guys have the talent when it comes to music. I'll do a list later. The universal language of the world is English, partly due to the fact that the U.S. is a mainly English speaking country, but hey, we have the UK to thank for that. J
To you UK posters; Blair is a keeper!!!! If you don't want him anymore, we will gladly take him. He has NOT been a pansy to the US, just a really good friend. Thanks Tony!!! J
The fact of the matter is this; many Americans are afraid to travel. We are the targets of many acts of violence. While this scares many, I'm am not afraid to travel, but you would not see me going to Pakistan or Indonesia any time soon. J
Why is America hated so much? Because we are the only superpower. When you are at the top, the rest will try to tear you down. This is normal and natural. If Britain was the top dog, the same would also be true.
I can tell you this If an American went to Jakarta Indonesia wearing a US flag shirt, there are good chances that something bad would happen to them. If an Indonesian went on vacation in the US wearing an Indonesian flag shirt, chances are that nothing bad would happen to him.
What this says to me is that all of this hatred for the US is very misplaced. The US has done more help out other countries than any other country. Do you know who gives the largest amount of food aid to North Korea? Yes its true. The US!
I'm so glad that we have a President who stands up and calls the kettle black when it is black. No more of this sugar coating crap. Kim Xiong il Is a brutal tyrant who is EVIL, yes EVIL. Sorry guys, no way to sugar coat that. And the Mullas in Iran that are holding the population under its Iron grip, EVIL as well. And Saddam and His sons who killed more Arabs than the US ever has or ever will. EVIL! I don't give a hoot about WMD. The UN and Clinton even said that they had em'.
To the UKers who stood beside us and to Tony Blair; Thanks, We love you! J
No more deals with Dictators who kill and torture! Castro - watch your back or what happened to Milosevich will happen to you. To the rest of the world that stands back and does nothing while dictators kill and torture; “You have blood on your hands”
Oh yeah, it was estimated that Saddam killed 5000 Iraqis anually on average. The US ground invasion only killed 1200, so we actually saved 3000 Iragis for this year alone. Ask any of the Iragis that had their ears cut off!!!
To the rest of the world. We are you and you are us. The US is every country on earth living together in one country. We are a mirror to the world. We are every nationality and and every religion. We are what your offspring has made us.

O.K everyone lets have a group hug and sing Kumbayah before a mod. locks this thread.

I wish I had the money to do that.I'm lucky I've been there twice, high school grad. and honeymoon, most mainlanders(Hollies) have never been there.

No i didn't! that was Will!! what are you saying about me and Will?!
CP,
we probably won't get to talk much longer on this one - but. A lot of people worldwide view the actions of the US (yes, the aid, the monetary support and the millions of people shouting "clear world debt! we don;t need the money! mummy left me her two summer houses and all the ponies, so we must be doing ok!") as seen as meddling. and the vietnam thing doesn't go down too well either....
Basically, where you see things as a moral obligation to help others, the people who -don't- get helped, or not helped as much, see it as favoritism and meddling.
Much like Iraq, in years to come that war will be seen to have been none of your business, and an all round stupid thing to do, simply because it didn;t concern you in the first place. I'm not denying taking down evil dictators is beneficial to the citizens, i'm sure their lives will be improved, and they'll know it. but the people in the country next door won't know it.......

As I was reading some of the responses, it made me wonder what are some common beliefs/thoughts that folks from other countries/states/provinces have about americans?
I'll start off by saying:
Japan: People sleep in cylinders "50" stories high. You have no privacy at all. You have a deep, formal heritage where honor means everything. Costs a million bucks for some crappy house. I believe this from watching the discovery channel, Highlander episodes, and history classes.
Britian/England: Weird real estate laws (99 year leases). Think that Americans are weird because we drive places. "Laugh" at us when we talk about history since ours is in its infancy compared to yours. Still dont like Americans even after we "bailed" you out of 2 world wars. I remember my history professor years ago saying that verbatim, wondering if thats what y'all think. I heard about y'alls heat wave. I just thought it rained there all the time.
Africans: Wake up to zebras, elephants, and pirahanas(sp?).
Asia/Russia: Cold as can be. Not allowed religious freedom. No free enterprise
Canada: Cold. Poor medical system
...I could start a whole new one for in the United States by state, but we'll see where this goes.
No mind you, I am NOT trying to be mean. This is stuff that I have heard in our schools, colleges, people on the street, and in the work world. It is not to be offensive to anyone. I would love to hear what everyone's responses are and some beliefs about americans.
-
Sorry it been a while since I looked at this so my post will be long!. I'll start off by saying Will Hay I didn't know you were english

I just have to say that about ~70% have roots in Europe. But, we are also diverse. Just take a look at my (5) managers at work: One's African, One's African-American, one's Spanish, one's mexican, and the others middle-eastern! Another thing I have to say is that I have taken AP European history, so I do know a lot about Europe's past.

@flaninacupboard
Well there is a war on terror going on and if you have not noticed it is NOT just aimed at the US. Even Saudi Arabia has started to crack down on the militants in that country. They are uncovering some pretty scary stuff. See here:
http://www.cnn.com/2003/WORLD/meast/08/17/saudi.clerics.ap/index.html
ANY sponsors of terror, countries who simply look the other way, or countries who spout aggressive language, like "we will turn America into a sea of fire" is our business and should not be taken lightly. The FBI took terror threats lightly and it lead to 3000 of my countrymen dieing. Sorry pal, that "none of your business" stuff will not work anymore. This is a global problem now, and we (civilized world) will need to work together on this.
Make no mistakes; North Korea is starting to build nukes and eventually will sell some to the highest bidder, and I'm sure that bidder will NOT be a friend or ally of the US or Britain. Any country who thinks they can escape the hand of terror by simply going with anti-American rhetoric, is fooling themselves and their citizens. Much of the world secretly wants the US to fail in this war. But guess what? If a nuclear device or dirty bomb is ever detonated in a major US city like NY. The Global economy will collapse. Yeah, that's right, even the European economy. The stock markets around the world would be finished. Of course the terrorists would claim to have more bombs hidden in other cities even if it was not true.
OH my, just the panic alone would have devastating consequences. And all of this does not even begin to scratch at the surface of Bioterror which is cheaper and easier to create. The next 20 years will be a very interesting time to be alive on this planet. See here http://www.twnside.org.sg/title/2142.htm or here http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article2848.htm or here http://www.vaccinationnews.com/DailyNews/July2002/Poliocausing12.htm
There are currently 7 billion people on this planet, the number doubles in 40 years. Yeah that’s right 14 billion. Have you hugged your child lately? It is estimated that in 20 years there will be 3 to 5 more nuclear armed countries. Do you really want that future for your children? If not, I would suggest that you elect (if you live in a Democracy) leaders who will aggressively go after rogue nations who will develop and use WMD. Let's be clear here. Just because you are nice to Islamic radicals does not mean that you are off their hit list. If you are a westerner, you're on the list, PERIOD. Let's not confuse Radical Islamists with moderate. I have friends who are moderate Islamists, they work at my company here in the US and believe that the Radicals have soiled and hijacked their religion.
We here in the US do NOT have a "simple view" of world affairs, but a realistic one. You must kill the terrorists before they kill you. It is just that simple. You cannot sit down with terrorists and have milk and cookies. They will continue to attack you no matter what. Look at this weeks new. Hamas blows up bus killing 20 and injuring 100. There were civilians and little kids!!! A cease fire was in effect. Of course Israel dose not help much by slaying a Hamas leader the next day, but what do you expect. Do you really think that Hamas wants peace? Their motto is "we will not rest until every Jew is dead" sound like someone from Germany's recent past?
This peacnik shit is total fantasy land stuff. There will always be evil in the world, and if you don't confront it, you’re almost a party to it.
As I remember it, there was a guy right in Europe’s back yard. His name was Slobodan Milosevic. He was "ethnically cleansing" his country side. Yes, killing ethnic Albanians randomly and right in Europe’s back yard. Women and children for GODs sake! There was no outrage from Europe at all. As I remember, Clinton had to rally NATO and the European states to take action against this hitleresque fellow. Yeah, the US had to lead the way again. Oh and by the way, there is NO oil in Serbia. What will it finally take to make the Europeans understand that Evil cannot go unmatched? Really, I would like to know.
Don't get me wrong, I love the Europeans. You guys are our brothers. My girlfriend and I will probably visit the UK next year because YES, Europe is fascinating and steeped in rich history. We just need you guys to back the good guys. We really are not that bad at all. Please come and visit, and find out, as Will Hay did, that we are not the simple pigs that we have been portrayed as, in the European media.
I'd say peace, but that's not reality - Madmen will continue to pop up. George Bush is NOT one of them.
