  1. Where are the subtitles stored in a DVD ?
In the Vob file or IFO ?
Cause I got a DVD now and I want to add subtitles.
Do I have to re-author the whole dvd or can I just add them to the vob/ifo file ?

  2. VOB. The VOB files are MPEG2 files that contained multiplex (aka muxed) video (m2v) audio (ac3 or PCM) and subtitle streams. These are know as elementary streams.

Combining your elementary streams into a single (or several) VOB file/s is know as multiplexing (aka muxing), but is more commonly called authoring. It's when you author the DVD that you define the chapter points, VTS, menu links, etc. This info is stored in the IFO files.

Read the 'what is DVDR' section to the left for more info.

To answer your question. You need a program that can author DVDs with subtitles. The only programs I know of that can do that are: DVD Maestro, Scenarist, Reel DVD, Adode Encore and IFOEdit. The first two cost ~$3k, the next two ~$550 and IFOEdit is free You'll need to have your subtitles in SUP format for IFOEdit to mux them.

See the guides here and at http://www.doom9.org for authoring DVDs with IFOEdit (there is also a tread running on this currently and several others if you do a forum search).

doom9 doesn't say anything bout changing color of subs.

  4. Scenarist is at LEAST $15,000. Maestro was roughly $30,000 with the inclusion of the MPX series encoder card.

  6. I guess it depends on how you got your subs.

    This guide may help.

In Maestro's subtitle editor, click "Edit Pallete..."
