  1. I'm trying to back up my copy of Chicago (Widescreen edition) to SVCD and I'm having a problem that I have never seen before. It only is effecting the Video. The audio portion sounds good... the quality, not necessarily the content.

I was able to rip the VOB files to the hard drive with Smartripper (w/o Macrovision). I extracted the audio with DVD2AVI as usual. The project file loads in to TMPGenc, but when I look at the preview window, the action sequences contain a ton of jitter (almost like a bad special effect depicting an earthquake). I ran a test encode of a one minute section and the resulting MPEG file contains this jitter as well. Just to be thorough, I also ran the same test section again with the opposite Field order, but the result was the same.

I took the DVD to my father's house and attempted to back it up on his system. He has a similar set up, but he uses CladDVD and he allows it do the frameserving in DVD2AVI for him (once again w/o Macrovision). When I loaded in the project files in to TMPGenc, it did the exact same thing.

I attempted to open the VOB file from the hard drive with PowerDVD and everything looked great. No jitter, everything was normal. I went back to my house and tried to play the VOB file in PowerDVD and everything looked good there, too.

When I load the VOB files in DVD2AVI, everything is as it should be and when I check out samples of the video from within DVD2AVI it looks fine. I have used this program a million times (give or take), but never had issues with the output, but that appears to be the case on this movie. I use the 1.77.3 version of DVD2AVI, and I'm not sure which version of DVD2AVI is packed in my father's version of CladDVD, but the CladDVD version is the most recent one (non XP).

Has anyone had the same experience with this movie? Is there another program that I can try in order to create the project files? Has anyone seen this on another movie? Most importantly, is Miramax using some new form of copy protection?

    Thanks in advance,

  2. so have you actually physically burnt it to disc yet.as far as i can see, thats the only way you will find out,or at least a portion of it to disc, then you will find out if its ok or not.
i get the strange playback problems as well, but they burn fine.
it seems to be a field problem on playback through that software, not anything important.
i have a childrens dvd that did that when it was being worked on by TMPGEnc,in that it the interlacing was just really bad looking, but when it was finished it was fine.
give it a try,and see how it goes,.

  3. burn it to an image file and try playing it with the software player. I just backed up Scary Movie II and it played like crap on power DVD in File mode but when I burned it to image with Nero and loaded it into the image drive it played just fine.

  4. I burnt a sample of the movie to disk and it still looked horrible. I was able to get it to work, though. I imported the VOB file directly in to TMPGEnc using the MPEG-2 add-on. I used the audio that was created by DVD2AVI and everything ended up ok. It did take about 50% longer to encode, but at least it's done. Thanks for the suggestions.

  5. could be a top field first issue, however there will probably never be a new encyption standard for dvds as older players need to be able to read them...

  6. Tried DVD Decrypter instead of SmartRipper?

PS: Yeah, Lennox was in trouble at the end of the second.
You stop me again whilst I'm walking and I'll cut your fv<king Jacob's off.

  7. Lennox was in trouble as soon as he stepped on the scale at the weigh in. Alas, you have found out why I got in to video capture and editing to begin with.
