I'm thinking of getting a new computer soon.I'll probably use this mostly for encoding and editing of video. I was either thinking of dual athlon 2600mp's or a pentium 4 3ghz. I'm still undecided. However, I've never really got a straight answer on how long it would take to encode say, a 2 hour DVDr using tmpeg or something similar, so I thought this possibly as good a place as any to ask. You can also put xeon times in here, be good to see just how fast some of you can encode movies.
thanks

Depends on what settings you are going to us in Tmpgenc also. Are you going to use filters? 2-pass? SVCD,VCD or CVD? it all factors in on how long it will take. my system config can encode in realtime and faster depending on what encoder i use i meanly use CCE and Tmpgenc, CCE will give me faster results and can do X-passes (i use 4-pass mostly) and up to par results i use tmpgenc when i need to use filters easy without the hassle of avisyth and making a script to use them these filters slow down the process very much even for my system but if i encode without filters it takes me about 1hr 25mins for a 2hr movie in SVCD and in CCE it takes me little less than 1hr 15mins generally. And as for processor goes the dual athlon will probably be cheaper than the 3ghz but i dont know about the dual mother board they usually cost more than a regular board my tyan dual amd board cost me $350.
