I have read some post on here and I found some "guides", but they are extremely long and complicated. Is there an easier way to do this? I am open to any suggestions.

Thanks for any info you have.

Sadly no. Especially for those of us that semi-regularly want to go from PAL SVCD to NTSC DVD. It's relatively straightforward, but it takes hours and hours and has quite a few steps.

Its really not that complicated at all, PAL is simply slightly faster than NTSCfilm, so all you have to do is slow it down. Use this TMPGenc template to slow down the video.

    http://users3.ev1.net/~CavemanLawyer/PAL2NTSC.mcf
Make sure you right click and "save as."

All you need to do is load your vobs in dvd2avi, set field operation to none, color space to RGB, and YUV-RGB to TV scale. (note these settings are only for THIS template.) Also, on the audio tab set Dolby Digital to Demux all tracks. Then hit File/Save Project and dvd2vi will make a d2v and demux all of your AC3 tracks.

Load your d2v in TMPGenc and load this template. All you need to set in the template is your encode mode of choice (ie: CQ vs. 2-pass VBR) and set your bitrate. When its done encoding, you will have an m2v file.

Now take all of the AC3 files that DVD2avi demuxed and encode them in BeSweet using the PAL-NTSCfilm template. This will give you new AC3 files.

If you want subtitles then rip them off the original DVD using Subrip and in the output format set the fps to 29.97.

Now you can import your m2v and ac3 tracks directly into your dvd authoring software if it accepts elementary streams, or you can mulitplex your streams into an mpg program stream first.

This takes care of the movie itself. If you want to keep the menu's then sorry but that actually is very complicated and there is just no way around re-encoding and re-authoring each menu.

  7. neoDVD (not sure of you need Plus or Regular edition) will take files (VOB, MPG, AVI and convert to or from NTSC or PAL in the process of creating a DVD or VCD... I have done the process a little over 10 times, 8 times worked fine, 2 times the sound was 1-2 seconds out of sync. But the process was sooooo easy to do. Just import the file and pick your output for the DVD or VCD (NTSC or PAL...)

    gcutler:

How was the quality though? I'd be interested to try it out on my favorite "pain in the butt" scenario - taking 3 PAL SVCD's and outputting one NTSC DVD...

As for the sound sync problems, that's probably due to the program deciding on its own to go to 29fps NTSC instead of 24fps NTSC... or of it "forgetting" to downsample the audio by 1fps. Or something like that.

  9. The sound sync was random, in that if I tried the same VOB again, it worked fine 2nd time around.

You have very little control of PQ, you can set the PQ to one of 3 settings Best, Good or OK (forgot the actual setting names).

But even using the medium PQ setting, it was very watchable.

  10. i use tmpg to convert my pal to ntsc stuff (dvd), but the option on neo dvd sounds interesting. the only problem wit htis, is thta neodvddoes not offer snd trial version to download, so you would have to buy it and im not sure if i would want to do that. But i am going to try this trick with some other apps (like maestro) although i might have to use dvdpathcer to trick the software, be interesting too see how it works--

The easiest way to "convert" is to just have a player (like an Apex or Mintek or Cyberhome) that plays any disc PAL/NTSC from any regions R0-R8.

I tend to buy a LOT of foreigns movies, so this was my best option. Otherwise I'd be converting non-stop and would never get around to my cartoon conversions and VHS->DVD backups.

  13. the problem with the most of those machines is that the coversion most of those machines do, does not convert the image that well, especially when it's an animorphic pal image. I know the older Malataa players were great for this and peformed a conversion as close as possible without actually ripping and encoding.
I can play stuff on a few players i have but for convience and if i want to bring the dvd to someone else's house, i need that ntsc format.

Yeah, I second mazinz's appraisal. My player, for instance, plays any region movie, in any format. But its PAL playback is VERY jerky. Watchable, but irritating.

No, can't keep the menus, and I don't think they have demos... But I copied VOBs right off the DVD (no encryption) and imported straight into program, had to make new menus...
