  1. ive downloaded a few DVD rips . ive VCD'd em to just normal VCD, (352x240) but since the res. is too small, the quality stinks!. so i used SVCD (480x480), the still picture quality is very good and sharp but moving picture is horribly pixelated. there is so much block noise. its terrible. makes it really bad to watch. DOES ANYBODY KNOW HOW TO ELIMINATE BLOCK NOISE FROM SVCDS?? ive been searching for the answer to this for AGES. The source AVI file was not like this. When it is encoded it goes really bad. can someone PLEASE HELP ME HERE??!?!?!!!! i really would appreciate the help here.

Is there any other setting that can help to reduce block noise that is independant of bitrate?

Those avi's are most likley divx's. Divx are definitely not meant to be converted to anything. More bitrate will help but your probably always going to get block noise. Also most divx have smaller resolution. When you resize that to 480x480 block noise becomes much more apparant. If you want high quality svcds you need to use a high quality source other than divx or you need to just start downloading svcds instead. Converting divx to svcd is a bad idea.

TMPGenc has a noise reduction option and you can use some excellent noise reduction filters through avisynth. It will help but not much in your case.

What are some good settings to use in the filters?
Will "Soften Block Noise" setting on the Quantize Matrix help in this case?
