I've had this prob before. I'm trying to make a copy of one of my vcd's. I can only extract 50% of the disk to my hard drive. I've tried virtualdub, vcdgear, TMPGenc, nero and of course just using windows. Whats really weird is the vcd plays fine in my pc with windvd! Can someone steer me to a program that can either record from my cdrw -drive or rip it to my hd????![]()

I have had this problem before, too. It usually happens to me at 98% ripped though
.
I get around it by using Instant Copy 7 to make a copy to the harddrive. If you check in the options, there should be a tab/drop down where you can tell it to ignore errors and to copy them anyway. Since the disc plays normally anyway, copying whatever the "error" is doesn't seem to have any real effect. If you don't have IC7, then the same should work for any other burning program that allows you to ignore and copy errors. -
Have you tried the copy and paste option from CD to HDD? no program needed and seems to work for me, just make sure you dont select "cut", instead of "copy", hehe.

Isobuster (available in tools section).
Load vcd, start isobuster, open mpegav folder on vcd and right click on AVSEQ01.DAT file. Click extract but filter only m2f2 Mpeg frames. Name the file you are going to create <whatever-you-like>.mpg (dont forget the .mpg suffix). You can tell isobuster to ignore errors if there are any on the disk. -
Remember; VCD/SVCD/KVCD hve no error checking (hence the 800 MB versus 700 MB capacity). They problem you describe is an error on the disk. Players skip over the erro and keep going (you may notice a hiccup when viewing). Ripping is a precise process, and it barfs when it can't read a sector ( the error is in the sector header, not the 'data' most likely ).

I forgot to mention I already tried Isobuster too. The copy and paste with windows was the first thing I tried, that usually works. It froze at 50% also! I'm thinking maybe I could somehow "record" it while its playing from my cdrw drive to my HD. Anybody know of any pc video recorders?

Ok so isobuster didnt work. Well this has worked for me in the past when all else fails.
Get a demo of the burning program cdrwin if you havent already got it and use extract disk/tracks/sectors mode to make a bin and cue of your vcd. Mark the error recovery mode as "ignore".
As you are making your image you should see cdrwin counting up errors on the disk. If it barfs that sectors are unreadable then you are stuffed but if you get a bin and cue produced then you can use vcdgear to convert the bin file to a working mpg. -
You should be able to just copy the file from the CD to your hard drive like any other file.

Glad to help, ej - There's a lot of help in this forum and that was my first posting... I've been using CCD for several years now and haven't found too much it won't work with (of normal CD/VCD's, that is). Great program, too bad they have stopped development on it as of the most recent version. BTW: what kind of VCD's were you backing up? Haven't seen too many commercial ones lately, but I buy Russian movies for my wife (real Russian movies, not American movies dubbed in Russian). We always buy them and make backups, so we can play the backups and not worry about damaging them since we keep the original put away somewhere. Later...
