  1. Hi,
I am using a SONY TRV-18E connected to my Soundblaster Audigy Firewire port.

Through this I am transfering data to the PC for storage and later editing.

My problem is that during the transfer some noise appears in the picture and sound. From time to time small squares (approximately 10x10 pixels) which are incorrectly colored appear briefly, together with "scratches" in the sound.

The error is not on the recording, as the image and sound through the TV is fine.

    System configuration:
Windows XP SP1, (all latest updates installed)
    AMD XP1800+
    512 MB RAM
Creative Audigy with firewire, (driver updated)
RAID 0 with 2 30 MB HDs, one partition
SONY TRV-18E camcorder, with XP driver from Microsoft.

Does anyone know this problem, what it is and particularly how to solve it?

    Thank you in advance

    Cheers

Have you tried other DV capturing programs?
    Hello.

  3. Hi,

Sorry, I should have mentioned this in my post. Yes I tried:
    MS Moviemaker
    NeoCAPTURE
and the small freeware capture utility discussed here on the site (which of couse I cant remember the name off).

All with the same result, which leads me to suspect

    Cheers

You are probably thinking of DVIO. were any other programs running during your capture?
    Hello.

  5. I did have Norton AV 2003 running, which I will try to close down during my next try.

Is this problem what is described as lost frames?

    Regards

I don't know if this helps, but I've always used the Windows XP Movie maker to capture from firewire. Never had a problem.

Your antivirus might have been a problem. Could be a USB device causing problems too.

  8. Just to follow up.

I have been doing a lot of testing and optimization, verification of drivers, defragmenting etc the last days.

    However the problem still exists.

I am still not sure this is what is categorized as a dropped frame (but what do I know), so I have added a picture of what the problem looks like.

Is this the result of a lost frame?
If not, what is it then?

    Cheers

Oh?.... How often does the occur? To me it looks like a problem on the tape. Sometimes tape damage can look like that. Is it always in the same spot?

If it is some sort of tape problem, it is likely that you will not see it on your TV. The encoder will "cover" some of that damage when it converts to analog. When you transfer to your computer, there is no error correction, so any problems will be transfered. Have you tried cleaning the heads on the camera?

Wish I could help more, but now I'm kind of out of ideas.

  10. Hi,

Thanks for your suggestion. You are right I dont see the result on the TV, but neither on the Camcorder LCD screen which I would think was direct digital feed. Or is this converted to analog also?

Each capture seems to result in noise at different locations, which until now has made me think it is something in the transfer process. Further the DV has not been used that much, so for I wouldnt think it needed cleaning already.

    Cheers
