Anyone heard anything positive/negative about the made in Japan Buffalo writers?... reliability? compatibility?... they're pretty cheap here in Japan, and am considering getting one... thanks for all yur help...

Buffalo is a marketing brand similar to CenDyne or Ikebana in the US, it basically repackages the OEM drives from Sony, Pioneer, and/or LG/Hitachi and sells them with a lower price. Check the specs to make sure which OEM drive you are getting so that you'll be able to update the firmware.
