I am using virtualdub to remove the audio and then using TMPEG to reencode, however the audio is out of sync. How can I fix this problem?
Thanks

Is it out of sync from the start? Does it get worse as it goes along or does it stay out by a fixed amount?

Scan your source file for bad frames and remove them, then do your conversion over again.. Here's a guide.

Thanks for the advice, I did as the guide said but it still found no bad frames, the movie I am trying to do is the dvd-rip of johnny english, its encoded via xvid codec. Anyone else have any ideas on what could be wrong?

Unfortunately, it can still have bad frames even if Vdub didn't detect it. Look at the video and see if there's any glitches where the audio and video lose sync. If there is a glitch then you can use Virtualdub to edit it out.

how do I look for glitches? frame by frame? Also, I have 2 other movies I am trying to convert and all have audio sync problems. there has got to be an easier and more reliable way to convert these files, any ideas?

If you've downloaded these AVIs - This is the reality. 9 out of ten DivX/XviD AVIs dl'ed using P2P are full of errors. Not that they can't be repaired, but there's always a point where the work you have to put in to correct them just is too much for what you get.
Yes, you have to find where the desync occurs, then step frame by frame in VirtualDub in that region. Then, when the bad frames start, note the first bad frame, then keep stepping until it's fine again. Delete this region. Not until you have a error free AVI, you can extract the audio track.
As the VirtualDub documentation says that it will never save out a AVI with bad frames, you could also as a first step save out a second copy of the AVI using direct stream for both audio and video. In theory, this will leave you with a working source material.
