  1. I have a mpg2 and I want to add PERMANENT subtitles since my DVD doesn't support swtchable subs.

I have searched all over the net and couldn't find anything that actually works without reencoding to avi and rereecoding to mpg all over again. If anyone knows how to do that, PLZ POST IT HERE!!

Any help will be really appreciated... thanks. =)

Good luck. I have been trying to find the same thing. It makes no sense to change apples to oranges back to apples again. I think technology hasn't caught up with US yet

  3. I think programs like Ulead Video Studio will let you add permanent subtitles to an MPEG2 clip.

It should work fine with virtualdubmod or virtualdub-mpeg2-ac3 and with a subtitle filter and then frameserve to tmpgenc.

Or using vobsub or ffdshow with tmpgenc(you must have a powerdvd mpeg2 codec or the mpeg2 tmpgenc plugin to be able to open mpeg2 in powerdvd).

  5. Permanent subtitles are not really subtitles. They are just addition video contained in the MPEG video. You might as well ask "I have this file containing pictures of trees, I want to add it to my current MPEG2 file WITHOUT re-encoding."

I can't be done. Even selectable subtitles are treated as selected bitmaps (ie. they could be subs or pictures, or chinese characters it really doesn't matter to the DVD player/authoring program).

You can mux/de-mux selectable subs thou. There is no way to add new VIDEO to a current video without re-encoding.

I forgot to add what Vejita-sama said...you must reencode but you don't have to reencode to avi you can reencode directly to mpeg2.

  7. Reencoding directly to mpeg2 would be very helpfull though. But I had already tried this but not even this works... maybe I'm doing something wrong....

Let's see if I got it right...

    https://www.videohelp.com/forum/userguides/153058.php
I tried this "easiest method" and it didn't work. Why would it work only because I have vobsub installed anyways....

    https://www.videohelp.com/subsvirtual.htm
All I have to do is to add my subtitle with a filter (like subtitler or textsub). And then frame serve it to TMPG and then reencode it to mpg2? Now this one sounds reasonable, I'm gonna give it another try.. maybe I did something wrong..

ps: I did install the "handler".

  8. I have a stupid question btw....

I found a movie on emule with 2 audio tracks and 2 subs, so I dled it (it's a SVCD image) and just burned it to a cd-r. Now I dunno how to select the audio tracks and subs.... cuz there r no buttons..... how do I switch them??

  9. I tried again and I frame serve it and leave the window open and then try to encode the .vdr file with TMPG but it says its not a valid file! It should read that file, right!?

  10. I'd use AVISynth to open the mpeg, and have it use the vobsub filter that was written for vdub since it can use vdub filters. This is how I add subtitles, which half the movies I convert to CVD have.

  11. But do u save it as avi and reencode it all over again to mpeg? Or do u frame serve it?

Frameserve if you can. It avoids having to re-encode it.

    That's what happens......

  15. you have to bump the vdr priority up if tmpgenc complains about it.

  16. U mean that priority task option in TMPG on the options tab?

If so, it is high already for both active and not active.

If not, plz tell me what to do.... I dunno what's wrong with it.... why it doesn't open the .vdr file!

  18. Check out the rules link at the top on the screen:

Please try not to "bump" your topic.
But yes, the priority task is what I was talking about.

These are the priorities he is talking about:

    Hello.

  20. Oh wait a sec, you might not be frame serving right, I dont use Virtual dub to do it anymore, but I remember that you have to do the start frame serving, then when it asks for a file name enter something like a.vdr, leave Virtual dub alone, and then start TMPGEnc and open the a.vdr as your video source.... go-go run-on sentences.

I believe you are supposed to use the remote while the movie is playing.

Not all DVD players support selectable subs in SVCD tho... And no software SVCD player I'm aware of.

Try BS Player or Power DVD. Open the file (in file mode), then while it's playing select options then change audio tracks and sub tracks. I never have any issues (although I generally don't have a lot of multi-audio tracks, but I do have a lot of movies with subs).

WMP won't do this, don't even try.

  28. The subs button on the remote doesn't work dude.

I guess my player doesn't support selectable subs then.. even though it says it does on the website.. oh well..

Open the file (in file mode)
If you do this, you're not playing a SVCD, you're playing a MPEG file. Cheating!
