  1. If u have an avi and want to make a dvd to play on a stand alone dvd player, u also want to have 5.1 audio.

    Which software to convert ?
    Which software to burn with?

I have never done a dvd so i am really a newbie...And there is a lot of different software..

  3. For 5.1 sound, you would need an AC3 encoder that supports 6 separate audio streams - Vegas Video will do the trick... or you can try Soft Encode but that is no longer sold and has been enhanced and integrated into Vegas Video

For authoring you'll need software that supports AC3. DVD Lab do the job.

  4. Encoders (what you have dubbed conversion software) are a realm unto themselves within video and everyone has their preferences. Some encoders do the job better than others. I personally prefer MainConcept (either standalone or the one integrated into Vegas Video) since it is faster than TMPGEnc but your mileage may vary. Some folks like TMPGEnc better and others swear by Cinema Craft Encoder (CCE). It's a matter of taste, cost, and what suits your needs and budget best. I would recommend Vegas Video for a greater part of your DVD needs, personally.

  6. By "make" 5.1 audio I thought you meant create an original 5.1 ac3 audio streams from 6 different channels. Are you looking to just make "back up" dvds? If that's the case try DVD Shrink and burn it with Discjuggler, Nero, or Prassi. What format is your avi source file, Divx?
