Whats up .
I downloaded some movies from a friend at a LAN and I am having difficulty playing them. The file extension is .r000, .r001, etc. The entire movie is about 600 MB, and each .r00 is broken into 20 MB files. Anyways, what program do I need to encode these files into MPEG's? Or what player do I need to use, thanks.

You are coming VERY close to talking about warez
Remember no warez....
Asked your friend what you need to do. That way you and others will not get a warning for talking about what looks to be warez

There is no way to know with certainty if what you have is warez movies or your friend's vacation clips and since you have been advised by others on the matter I won't add my 2 cents.
Here is some general information.
Files with the r00..r01... extensions are usually compressed files using winrar (similar idea as winzip but many say it is better). You need all the pieces to open the "rar" file. What you will find inside of the rar I can't tell you since it's only a container to hold 1 or more files in a compressed format. Putting a mpeg or avi file in a "rar" saves very little space since these formats are already self compressed. On a shared network, some people add a password to the rar so that even if you copy the rar file the contents are still protected.
There are other lesser known file splitting utilities which use similar numbering systems. Winrar will not work with those. In that case you would have to know what program was used to split the files or know some basic DOS copy command functions. There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway.

I had sent a PM to Stiltman to ask a simple question. Before the PM's get out of hand I figure I'll post it here. This tends to calm people down.

Those files could be of his friend having sex with his wife. They could be anything... they could be nothing. Yes, they could very well be warez movies or whatever. But unless he says "I downloaded the hulk and need to burn it to DVD" then, I don't see how you can say that.
This goes back to my original PM to Stiltman.
How Do You Know?
Don't assume.

omg ffs... what do you mean how do you know?? stilitman didn't say that it was warez, he has not locked the thread or taken any action against the poster (afaik).
The only thing he did was to say that it was very close to being a discussion about warez, and i'd have to agree.
Honestly who had ever downloaded a homevideo from a friend divided into several rar files?
It's not about being sure about what he's saying it's a question of common sense.
I mean, if someone downloaded the hulk, how can you be sure that he did not download it legally from the movie company?
Just give it a rest man...

Look closer he can't lock the thread cause he's NOT a mod.

Outside the strike zone is close, but it's not a strike... it's close.
By your definition, this whole site is very close to being a discussion about warez.
It's not about being sure about what he's saying it's a question of common sense.
Don't you think you should be sure before you act on it.
I mean, if someone downloaded the hulk, how can you be sure that he did not download it legally from the movie company?
By your own admission you agree he could have gotten it legally YET, you agree with Stiltman that it's WAREZ.Don't give in to DVD2ONE, that leads to the dark side.

@Marco33, whatever, mystichogan17 and anybody else interested in this discussion:
As far as I and other Mods (well, at least on other) are concerned, no warez issues have been raised by this thread. Yes, the movie in question may come under that category, but without the movie title, we have no way of knowing either way, so we have to give the benefit of doubt.
Oh, and BTW, Stiltman is NOT a mod, he is just doing a poor impersonation of one.

I am going to close this thread as it has served it's purpose and is now heading into a flame war.
To answer the original poster's question, gll99 is correct. You will need to download WinRar (www.winrar.com) and then you should be able to open the files. Remember to start at the first file, normally xxxxxx.r00 or xxxxxx.r01 however it may differ depending on the individual files.
Also to answer the question of whether this is warez or not? Yes, it probably is however (like Marco33 said) without an admission like the name of the movie it falls into a grey area that we can't really persecute.
