  1. When using TMPGEnc's Project Wizard to creat SVCDs, are you suppose to match the template based on the *source* material, or is it based on the *output* you wish to produce? Would you select the PAL template when the AVI you're converting is 25 fps, or when you wish to produce a mpg that runs at 25fps? If it's based on the source, then how would one go about converting from 25 -> 23/29?

Related issue : what template would one use when trying to convert from 24 fps to standard NTSC (23/39)?

    Thanks in advance...

The settings define what the output will be.

PAL to NTSC is not trivial, there is a guide for that.

Where can I find this? I see lots of guide dealing w/conversions, but none that specifically address PAL/NTSC conversions via TMPGEnc...

You should match the template to the source because that is the output that TMPGEnc will produce. You don't want TMPGEnc to do your framerate conversion, it can cause a/v de-sync. Follow the guide like Foo said

FYI the general idea is to take 25 fps video,
appy pulldown as if it was 24 fps film to convert
it to 30 fps. and resample the audio to match.
It will play 4% slower after this.

24 fps movies are regularly aired in Europe at 25 fps

Thanks for all the info. Normally I use DVD2SVCD (in AVI mode) to convert to svcd (including PAL-> NTSC), but I've run across a few files recently that have problems when I run through the usual. I thought I would give TMPGEnc a shot on it's own, but was unaware of which template to use exactly.

So what would you recommend I do with a source file that has a 24 fps? Lots of guides on how to do PAL->NTSC, NTSC->PAL , but what about 24fps files? Should I try to convert them to 23 and have a pulldown, or encode them right to 29? And suggestions?
