  3. Are you able to burn 4x DVD-R media at 4x? I've been having problems with that and this firmware appearently fixes this. Thx.

  5. How do I update?
And what do the mean in the readme with:

"Have the GSA-4040B connected to the secondary IDE channel as a master drive alone."

and does it matter what Transfer Mode I use for my secondary IDE channel

(like it apparently does for http://panasonic.jp/dvdram/english/softdl/firm/a127d321w2.html this drive)

  9. So what's the verdict? Should one take the trouble of updating the firmware?

Just bought a 4040BI and love it! But it does have the old firmware (104 or something). Haven't tried burning anything in 4x (don't have any 4x media), but it does burn CompUSA DVD-Rs (Princo) 1X at 2X speed with no problem. Now if the Princo DVD-R will last beyond 3 months.....

What media are you guys using (at 4X)?

  10. I've tried the 4x Princo (I get what I deserve... I know ) and Memorex. Neither will burn at 4x. The same media on other drives will burn at 4x. I tried the A300 firmware with no luck. Still no 4x DVD-R burning. Sigh.

  11. Anyone have any luck with DVD-RW? All I seem to make are frisbies. I have had good luck with Legacy DVD-R's at 4X.

Haven't try any DVD-RW yet...will soon. My understanding of the Legacy disks are that they're either Ritek 04's or Princo 4X (kinda hit or miss thing). I'm guessing you probably have the Ritek's. Try DVDinfo'ing them.

I was about to lay out some cash for the Legacy 4X at Newegg until someone informed me that they can also be the Princo brand...which to my knowledge fails after 3 to 4 months.
