i wanted to burn a movie....so i just decided to use nero but it was so slow...
what are faster encoders?...TMPGEnc?...or do they all encode @ about the same rate?

Some are faster than others but cost can be a factor too and TMPGEnc is one of the lower priced encoders. Both Cinemacraft Encoder (CCE) and Mainconcept are said to be faster than TMPGEnc, but not by huge amounts.

I disagree, TMPGenc is terribly slow using VBR when compared to CCE or Mainconcept encoders, about 2-3 times slower
But, I do agree that TMPGenc does seem to have better quality on the final output, I suppose they have to get that extra speed from somewhere
I can encode a 90 minute DVD dimensioned movie in about 60 minutes on a good run, using CCE or Mainconcept, but TMPGenc takes around 3-4 hours for the same movie, using the same CBR settings. Using VBR takes at least 2-2.5 times longer than that
Depends what you want quality or speed -

I would have to agree with Steptoe and repsectfully disagree with ZippyP on this one. The standalone Mainconcept MPEG-2 encoder runs on my p4 2.4 system at 1.2 times real time. Compare that to 4.5 times real time with TMPGEnc. Encoded quality is compariable, perhaps slightly better with TMPG but not worth the extra time.
The settings, insofar as they can be, are identical -- VBR, 2000 min 5000 av 8000 max, no special noise reduction (the MainConcept has a setting called "noise sensitivity" which functions smiliarly to TMPG's "noise reduciton" setting), motion estimation set to 12 out of 15 on Mainconcept or High (but not highest) on TMPG.
Those are virtually identical settings, ye the MainConcept runs 4 times faster than TMPG.
The speed difference grows even more remarkable when encoding to SVCD. I like to encode to a very non-standard SVCD format that uses 480 x 480 but DVD-quality VBR settings with 300 min 3000 av 6000 max. I cannot see any difference twixt SVCDs thus encoded and DVDs I have encoded when playing back from my DVD player, yet the encoding time drops enormously (along with the encoded filesize).
SVCD encoding is where TMPG really drops the ball -- only a 10% drop in encoding time, versus a full 40% drop in encoding time with MainConceopt. Using those settings, MainConcept encodes to SVCD in about 70% of real time while a TMPG SVCD encode with those settings requires a whopping 4 times real time.
For SVCD, that's a speed difference of 7 to 1. That really makes a difference, in my experience. MainConcept rocks. Buy it, it's worth every penny. -
MainConcept encoder bundled with Premiere 6.5 will only be as fast as Premiere allows it to. I exported a 1hr57min DV AVI movie (~25GB) with "4x3 hi-bitrate NTSC accelerated preset" where I used color saturate and sharpen filters in Premiere, plus turned ON and set to 10 the NR setting in MainConcept and encoding took ALL of 31 hours (!) on a P4 2GHzA, D850, 512MB RDRAM system. I suppose this would take even longer with TMPGenc.
For the nth time, with the possible exception of certain Intel processors, I don't have/ever owned anything whose name starts with "i". -
the fastest is CCE, and it produces a grate looking mpeg.
tmpeg tends to pixelate if you give it a low bitrate.
i have tried it many times and its allways the same way.
CCE will produce a better looking picture with a low bitrate than tmpeg.
with higher bitrates they are pretty much the same, CCE is just
faster.
but thats just me...HELL AINT A BAD PLACE TO BE
