  2. Try VirtualDub.

Otherwise, it is always best to try and get the best from the source on the first get go if possible.

  3. video will not be better than the source it came from. for example if your source is vcd quality no matter what you do it won'y look any better than that.

Your problem is most likely due to analog noise (snow) in your picture. You can use any temporal, or spatial smoother to remove it. Contrary to what your reading, you can indeed improve on your capture by post processing.

AVISynth, or VirtualDub are pretty much the standard around here for free tools. They come with a rich filter set to do exactly what your looking for. Find them in the tools section. You can find additional filters here:

Their both a good starting point when looking for filters.

  5. PixieDust is a noise-removal filter for AVISynth that's supposed to be good (haven't tried it myself). And if you're encoding to (s)vcd with TMPGEnc you can take advantage of TMPGEnc's kick-ass noise-removal filter. Only bad thing is that it's pretty slow.

Try boosting your signal level. 'Sparkles' mean you need another 5 - 10 db of signal level. Try an external decoder and send the composite/S-video to your capture card. Your computer is an incredibley noisey place for a TV signal to be. No internal capture card can ever capture an RF signal better than 'good'. 'Excellant' and 'DVD' quality requires an external reciever. This doesn't apply to composite/S-Video as it's already de-modualted.

Also make sure you are using real cables, not el-cheap audio cables in disguise. Also make sure everything is on the smae AC circuit, ground loops can adversely affect your capture (that includes cable/sattelite, reciever/demodualtor, and computer system).
