    when i try to convert my avi file to mpg using tmpgenc... i try to load the avi file and it says cannot load avi formast file

    You probably need to do some things like resize and letterbox it anyways. Use my guide in signature.

    You're probably missing a codec. Use GSpot to tell you what codecs the AVI uses.
    You could also try to open the AVI in VirtualDub and frame serve it to TMPGEnc. I've found that VDub often has no prob opening an AVI that TPMGEnc refuses to open.
