Many people have told me that Sony has some sort of software proprietary limitations on their CD/DVD Writers... Anyone know the truth behind this? Thanks for any info...

    .bump.

I know many of the users on the forum have Sony DVD/CD Writers... so please share your experience, if any, with any software conflicts you may have had with your writer... or even comment that you had zero problems with it... thanks

  3. Hi,

    Here's my five (euro)cents worth,

Got a Sony 510a DVD burner a week ago. No problems so far. Even the copy of Nero 5.5.x.x that came with the LiteOn CD burner (which is still in the computer) works fine burning DVDs after applying their latest upgrade.

My firmware version is 1b, and I dread to upgrade to 1c, as the instructions actually tell you to uninstall all sorts of software. Having worked with PCs for some 20 years now, I'm very much in favour of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

So far no probs with any software. DVDshrink (both versions 2.x and 3 betas) and TMPGEnc DVD Author trial work fine. Even capturing with the much discussed Pinnacle WinTV Pro card (at DVD LongPlay) works fine. I author (and burn) the captured files with TMPGEnc DVD Author trial.

So, in short, no problems so far.

I have had a DRU-510A for about 2 months now. So far I have used the following programs with no problems:
    DVDXCopy
    DVDXCopy Xpress
    DVD Shrink
    DVDinfo
    Veritas Record Now DX
    Nero
    Nero Express
    DVD Decrypter
    Sonic MyDVD
    Pinnacle Studio 8.5
Magix Movies to CD & DVD e-version

I also have an external firewire enclosure with my old Samsung DVD-ROM in it, which I use to read DVDs for backup purposes. I usually just use the Sony for writing. No conflicts with using both the Sony and the old Samsung. Before I got the firewire enclosure, I used the Sony for both reading and writing with no problems.
I also have the original firmware, and have had no problems. Therefore I have not upgraded my firmware, since it doesn't appear to be broken.

You can see the rest of my computer system in my profile, if you care.

don't know if this is what you mean, but the only "proprietary" thing I've run into with my DRU 500AX drive is that it is locked at 2x for ripping.

    so I rip with a Lite-On 16x that's not locked.

Otherwise, it's worked fine with Nero & DVD Decrypter, burning ripped discs and projects authored with DVD Lab and doctored with DVD2One, as well as data discs & the occasional cd burn.

no problems here. what are you having trouble with?

Thank you for the feedback everyone! I greatly appreciate it... after some interesting words with a someone today, I kinda found out what people meant by "software propretary" on Sony CD/DVD Writers. The software that comes with (in this case, DVD Writers) in particular is Veritas DLA [Direct Letter Access], which is a Packet CD writing program. The program doesn't allow you to use Nero InCD (another Packet Writing software) at the same... This is quite puzzling since it's not actually Sony who is "limiting" the software, it's Veritas... So basically you cannot have two Packet Writing programs installed at the same time (which makes perfect sense)...

    Thanks again everyone...
