  1. I have digital cable service here in NY and a ATI AIW 9800. I can watch and record video to my PC with it, but I cannot schedule a recording. Is there a way to do this or is there a reasonably priced product that can do the job? Thanks.

  4. Scheduling is one thing, getting the cable box on the right channel unassisted is another. If you truly want tivo functionality, you need an IR blaster to change the channel automagically - otherwise you don't have a PVR, just a VCR on disk. I don't have a complete list of PVR software that supports IR blasting, but I know Snapstream does. I'm pretty sure SageTV does.

You could also script a roll-your-own version of the IR blaster to work the other programs.

Unfortunately, there is not a thriving market in blasters for the PC. I blame DirectTV: most nerdy computer/video/TV buffs have DirectTV with a dual tuner tivo so that big chunk of demand for IR blasters on the PC is gone.

Someone has mentioned there's also an X10 IR blaster that can be used.

I use the timer on my DirecTV receiver. Just set timers on both the receiver and the computer. It's not hard.
