  1. I want to back up one of my sons dvd's on to his xbox. I copied the dvd on the hard drive but when I went to watch the movie files, they were crypted. I was able to move them over to my computer hard drive with no problem. I want to decrypt them on my computer and then move them back to the xbox. Anyway, every peice of software that I have tried to decrypt with wants to do it from the dvd itself. The only dvd drive that I have is the xbox and my 2 stand alone units. I have tried DVD Decrypter and Smartripper but both want to rip from the dvd. Can decryption be done from my hard disk? Or should I just bite the bullet and get a dvd drive for my computer?
    Thanks for any help,
    Joe B

Seeing as the things cost little more than a DVD movie these days, and a PC without a DVD reader will soon be like one without a CD drive.... get a DVDROM
Far as I know they have to read some kind of key info from the physical disc in order to decrypt, so until someone makes an X-boxed based ripper/decrypter utility (which will be probably in about never-to-infinity month's time) that's your best option.

If you don't mind a bit of hardware hacking and warranty invalidation, i think the later model Xboxes had a bog standard PC-compatible DVD drive in, so you could always open up the console and temporarily remove the drive (and connect it into the PC's motherboard in place of any CD drive it may have) for the duration of the rip.

Back after a long time away, mainly because I now need to start making up vidcapped DVDRs for work and I haven't a clue where to start any more!

  3. Yeah, thats what I figured, (buy a dvd-rom). I think I'll just get a burner (dvd) though. Great, now I have more research to do!
    Thanks,

  4. You have to decrypt it from the dvd, if you just copy/paste the files to your HD they are ruined. You must decrypt before you copy.
