I used to have VHS tapes that smelled like motor oil and VHS tape cases that smelled like gasoline. And they were new, ordered from The Tape Company direct. I've had Ritek G03 DVD-R that smelled liked corn nuts. In fact, I once had printer ink that smelled like corn nuts.

In almost all cases, what you are smelling is the residue of the plastic packaging material that was imprinted on the object. It'll fade, but toss out the container. The container is causing it. Plastics are mae from petroleum, and some cheaper ones are not bleached, washed, etc to remove odor.

Though I'll admit I don't have a clue why those few things smelled like corn nuts. They don't make anything except corn nuts out of corn nuts.

I'll make you a printout, and mail it to you if you want to try it. I doubt the paper/ink tastes like corn nuts. :P

What? You've never heard about the new "Smell-o-rama" capable disks?

No, that smell is normal (and I don't really think that it is bad). Kind of a sweet smell... <sniff>!

  5. Maybe someone at the manufacturing plant is playing a joke on you.

The person packing it probably passed gas and sealed it in your case. :P

Are you sure it smells like brown sugar or brown p00p? lol

Jensen - give off an ok smell, not very pleasing , but not very disgusting either.

Hypermedia - a rancid smell that almost made me vomit

Memorex - give the best smell and are my favorite brand of cd-r media all around

This experiment proves that smell is an idicator of quality. From now on, when I go to the store, I will ask to smell the opened spindle of cds before I buy to make sure I'm getting a quality product.

  7. Just my 2 cents. The very first set of cheap CD-Rs I bought about 6 or 7 years ago were the gold on gold (gold on both sides) and they had this smell. I've never seen any since, and I've gotten a few weird looks when I bring it up...so I don't any more

  11. i registered just so i can post in this thread, then i found out you have to wait a day before you can post then i forgot about it

ayway. i first noticed the smell a long time ago when i bought some PNY disks, that smelled somewhat like syrup which is what most of them smell like. right now i have some memorex that smell the same as well. im guessing they just made them differently than they used to. and i didnt just smell the cd-rs out of nowhere, i detected the smell when i opened the case, so i smelled them.

Would it be a reason for divorce?

    Any lawyer around here?

Well, here it is a full 6 months later and they still smell like brown sugar. The ones I wrote data to do not, but the bulk of the media istored in a drawer together still smell.

Seeing this thread INSTANTLY reminded me of an old TV commercial.
A woman asks the salesperson "Are these batteries fresh?"

    And the salesperson replies:
    "I don't know....squeeze 'em "

  21. My tdk cdr spindle always smells like burnt plastic at first. I guess everything has a smell to it. The smell goes away a couple days after opening the spindle though.
