  1. I'm trying to convert a PAL DVD movie to an NTSC DVD. I've successfully converted both the video and audio from PAL to NTSC and muxed the two files together to create one .mpg file. But, when I attempt to burn the file to a DVD-R with MF2, I get the following error message:

"Some chapter entry frame numbers exceen the total frames."

I've used the following tools to perform the conversion:
    1. DVDDecrypter
    2. BeSweet GUI for the audio conversion
    3. TMPGEnc for the video conversion and to mux the audio and video into a .mpg file.
    4. MovieFactory 2 to author the DVD.

I've read an old thread stating that the problem lies with the settings used in TMPGEnc to encode the video file. Specifically, Mxjshaf69 posted, "...you need to turn off 3:2 pulldown and 23.976 FPS(internally 29.970 FPS) when encoding." But, I was wondering if there's some other workaround - I don't feel like spending another 13 hours encoding the video. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Or, should I use a different DVD authoring software app? Any recommendations?

  2. It's sounds like you chapter stops are referencing a point that doesn't exist in a movie. I've had this happen before when I ripped an episode of a TV show and then added chapter stops.

Try authoring it using TMPG DVD Author. You can try it free and I've grown to like it much better that Movie Factory 2.

MF2 has a bug with 2-3 pulldown videos. It will
place the menus OK. When it runs checks, it thinks the
video is 24 fps instead of 30. Any chapter placed
past 80 % of the movie will fail. So just avoid placing
any chapters past 80%. For example you can't go past
    96 minutes on a 2 hour movie.

It's been like that forever. You would think they'd fix it.

Let me revise that. That doesn't make sense.
Chapter points are attached to Frames.
What is happening is when they convert a TIME into
Frames they are using 30 fps instead of 24.

So if a movie has 1000 frames, and its' 2-3 pulldown there are
really only 800 actual frames. If MF2 tries to put a chapter at say
the 90% point, it would put it at frame 900 which doesn't exist.
It should put it at frame 720.

All this is guesswork but i'd bet money on it.

If you use SOURCE material 'ripped' from commercial movie DVDs, you'll likely encounter encoding issues.

On the other hand, I understand Ulead has a new zip available that might work to resolve issues with 3:2 pulldown source material.

Please download the zip file and unzip it to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ulead Systems\DVD directory

  6. Foo, you were completely right! I eliminated the chapters I had for the last 20% of the movie and, voila, MF2 didn't give me the error message. Thanks for your great advice - much appreciated!

Specialist, what do you mean by "SOURCE" material? (this was my first PAL to NTSC DVD backup) Perhaps, if I go with your suggestion I would be able to include chapters for the last 20% of my movies??

Again, thanks to all who have posted - you've all been a great help.
