  1. I have some mov files taken with Olympus digital camera, these mov files are video only, no sound.

I used TMPGEnc to convert mov files to mpeg1 and add mp3 songs, however, the output mpeg1 file is mute, the mp3 song was not added.

Can anyone on this board help me out how to add mp3 file to mpeg1 in TMPGEnc? Thanks a lot.

  2. how are you adding the mp3 mate? using it as an audio source when you encode, or by muxing it in afterwards?

mp3 audio is not really a standard used with MPEG1 video.

As far as I'm aware, TMPGEnc won't let you use an mp3 as a source.

You might want to try MPEG-1 layer-2 (mp2) audio instead - especially if you want this to end up on VCD (MPEG1 format).

tooLame is a good mp2 encoder, and there are GUI's available for it.

  3. What I did was to input MOV file as video source, and MP3 file as audio source, the output MPG has the video only, MP3 file is discarded.

  4. MikeZ2,

every version of TMPGEnc I've ever tried won't let you use an mp3 as an audio source.

Is the mp3 a file you've prepared from something else, or just some music etc.. you have already in that format?

I'd stick to putting PCM wav in as the source.

If you've only got the mp3, I think you'll have to decompress it (lots of different tools which can do that for you under audio editors in the tools section) to a 16-bit PCM wav.

Then use it as the source.

I'd also recommend using tooLame as the mp2 audio engine in TMPGEnc.

    That should work for you.

  5. I'm using TMPGEnc-2.520.54.163 version.

When I input the audio source, I changed to all file type in the open diagog box to search MP3 files, TMPGEnc didn't complain anything.

I used other softwares such as Ulead and Dazzle to make VCDs, I was able to add MP3 files, but the picture quality was so poor that I had to scrap them.

The picture quality after TMPGenc conversion is superb, and I want to add MP3 songs to it, so far, no sucess yet.

  6. well if you really want it to work, i suggest you decompress the mp3 first - it's just what TMPGEnc would have to do before re-encoding to mp2 anyway (if you're doing MPEG1/VCD).

  7. I've been able to author DVDs with mp3 soundtracks using TMPGenc but it's not obvious how to do it. It's simple and easy. Here's how:
You must go into OPTION (left of FILE at top of screen) then into ENVIRONMENTAL SETTINGS then into AUDIO then click on MPEG-1 Layer III ENCODER to change it from DO NOT USE (default) to EXTERNAL PROGRAM. Now type in the directory location on your system of LAME, the most commonly used MP3 encoder. (You DO have LAME, don't you? If not, download it pronto.)
The other posters are right, you must also re-convert MP3 files to WAV and let LAME encode 'em back to MP3. LAME, huh?
Bear in mind that very few DVD players will play back a DVD made with an MP3 soundtr5ack. The DVD playback standard standard specifiies either Dolby AC-3, or WAV, or either of the previous with MPEG-1 layer 2. MP2 or MP3 as the sole soundtrack is NOT part of the official DVD spec, though it *might* work depending on your standalone DVD player.

I won't dispute anythin else you have said, but actually I believe mp2 playback is standard for DVD players sold in Europe.

    (see http://www.dvddemystified.com/dvdfaq.html#3.6.2,
Discs containing 525/60 (NTSC) video must use PCM or Dolby Digital on at least one track. Discs containing 625/50 (PAL/SECAM) video must use PCM or MPEG audio or Dolby Digital on at least one track. Additional tracks may be in any format.

  9. Again, ' not disagreeing with any of those points, but...

...made me think MikeZ2 was going for VCD format anyway.

So mp2 is definitely the standard there.

@MikeZ2 - see the 'What Is' section (links in top left corner) for details of the standards for different formats

Decompress your mp3's to PCM wav, set tooLame as your mp2 encoder (same process as spectroelectro described for setting Lame to do mp3), and feed the wav's in as audio source.

That's by far the easiest way for you to end up with VCD-compliant MPEG1 with video and audio.

  10. This all sounds complicated if you have access to ulead movie studio.

    1. Use tmpgenc to convert your files to mpeg one.

    2. Open ulead media studio.

    3. Inset file created by tmpgenc and then add your mp3

    4. Save.....your done.

Here's a much easier method which doesn't require any external tools:

    - In TMPGEnc, go to File>MPEG Tools...
    - In the Simple Multiplex tab, use your MP3 as your audio source, and leave the video source blank.
    - Under Type, select MPEG-1 if you are planning to make a VCD, or MPEG-2 if you are planning to make a SVCD/DVD.
    - Now run the process (takes 3 mins on my ancient PC) and you'll have an MPEG file as an output.

Now all you've got to do is use that freshly made MPEG file as the audio input in place of the MP3 file, and VOILA!!
I only dream in black & white...
