I'm moving and to save space planning to buy a laptop. Is there a way to take my internal dvd-rw and make it into an external so I can still use it with my laptop? Thanks.

Yes just buy an external 5.25" drive chassis that has a Firewire or USB 2.0 interface (or both), and install your DVD burner in it. These all have ATAPI interfaces in them and should work pretty well with any internal drive. Be careful though, because some of them (e.g. ADS) come with wimpy power supplies that do not meet the power requirement specs of some DVD-R/RW drives.
