I recently bought an Optorite DVD Burner, and have been attempting to burn some DVD’s. I successfully created 2 data-only DVD’s right away with no problems whatsoever. In fact it worked great!
Now I am trying to create a video DVD (backup of A Bug’s Life) and am having trouble getting these burnt discs to play in my Panasonic RV-31 DVD player and my Sharp DV-L70 portable player .
I am using Philips 2.4 DVD+R discs for media and, according to the Panasonic player review for my model, it’s supposed to be able to play both DVD+/-R and the Sharp should be able to play DVD-R, but not DVD+R.
I authored the VOB’s using DVD-lab and tested using Win DVD. Everything looks good. (Really like that DVD-lab!!)
I am using Nero to burn and realize there are some problems regarding UDF 1.05 or whatever, so here’s what I tried:
-Burned with DVD-ROM (UDF), UDF 1.02 > Panasonic can’t read, Sharp can’t read.
-Burned with DVD-ROM (UDF/ISO), UDF 1.02 with all the ISO options unchecked (as described in the guide about burning with Nero) > Panasonic can’t read, Sharp can’t read.
-Burned with DVD-VIDEO (I figured what the hell, I’ll try it) > Panasonic can’t read it. BUT, my Sharp portable COULD read this disc. (Interesting…)
In all cases, WinDVD has played the burnt discs just fine.
Any thoughts as to what I’m missing or what may be the problem here? My primary goal is to get discs to play on the Panasonic as this is my main player.
Thanks in advance,
Tim

You are not the only one with the Optorite problem

Thanks for the responses so far....
Gurm - What are Mark Errors?
Thayne - I did check compatibility as I mentioned in my initial post.. Panasonic RV31 says it suports both DVD-/+R.
Tompika - I have gotten one of the discs to play in the Sharp portable, and they ALL play fine on my PC using WinDVD4. I have also burned a couple data DVD's that came out perfectly... wouldn't this indicate that the burner is functioning correctly?
Thanks again,
Tim -
I'm glad you asked, Timmy.
Mark Errors are something that vance made up to explain why people have problems with copies.
Don't worry, I doubt that's your problem.

You will need to change the book type of your disc read here

:P

Very interesting, goldmember1....
So, if I'm reading this right, I should make sure the Book Type is set to DVD-ROM? Correct?
Also, to perform a Firmware update, the instructions typically mention to boot into DOS mode.... I'm using Windows XP, so would I use the CMD line? Or do I need to create a Win XP startup disk? I'm unclear about updating the FW since Win XP doesn't have DOS (as I understand it, anyways)...
Thanks so much for your assistance. I feel better already, LOL.

I've never heard that a dual burner was capable for bitsetting
You stop me again whilst I'm walking and I'll cut your fv<king Jacob's off. -
No dual burners are capable of bitsetting yet & I’d forget a firmware update for that purpose. But keep a look out.

Using Nero 6 to burn. I have a VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folder that I drag over for the compilation. The folders and VOB's were created by DVD Lab.
I have tried burning as DVD-ROM (UDF), DVD-VIDEO and DVD-ROM (UDF/ISO), all to no avail.
What else can I tell you that may help?
Thanks,
Tim -
interesting that this must be the fourth seperate post i've read regarding the same problem..with the same EXACT BURNER. Each time the standalone player was unable to play certain burned media when the specs of the standalone player said otherwise. While, in all cases, the specs don't mean much...i'd have to think this "OPTOWRITE" burner is doing something OPTO "WRONG" ....because it seems too conicidental that several people have to go the route of changing the book type in order to allow sucessful playback in their standalones.
Man, if there's already these types of issues with the optowrite burner, i'd hate to even ATTEMPT to use the HD TECHNOLOGY....I can only imagine what might happen. The cdr's may only be playable on 2 of the 9 planets..and Earth not being one of them. However, if you change the book type to "CDROM" maybe a 3rd planet will allow playback. -

Ok, show of hands - who thinks Vance is resorting to childish name-calling?
Hey Vance - I'll see your A in calculus, and raise you an A in Calculus 6 PLUS an A in "Functions of a Complex Variable". Yeah, here's a hint - I double majored in Math.
Now hush. You're subliterate and you believe in bizarre things.
AND you don't take criticism well. You resort to namecalling. I'm betting you're... 18? I would have guessed 12, but you claim to have taken calculus.
Bragging about High School is so... err... what's the word? Oh yes - precollegiate.

So first you were an honors calc student. Now you're the school bully? Dude, stop bragging about beating up the smart kids - which didn't include me by the way. I was the one who broke your arm, remember? Kempo helps with that.
You hijack every damn topic you can find with your "look it's mark errors" crap. And your "I know about it but I won't explain it because everyone says it doesn't exist" crap. Guess what? We say it doesn't exist... because it doesn't!
And for the record, I was one of the kids who never went to class.
Shows how much you know. Learn to type, learn to read, learn not to believe everything that the people at Pinnacle tell you. Upgrade your copy of Nero, and stop living in High School. This is the really real world. Some of us are trying to HELP the people on here.

What the **** is this MARK ERROR you guys are talking about?
Sorry for hijacking the topic but the Optorite won't burn a good DVD+R
anyway so I thought I could ask this. You stop me again whilst I'm walking and I'll cut your fv<king Jacob's off. -
I think there's an issue here with your drive. I think it has nothing to do with "mark errors". I was making a bad joke, because Vance has repeatedly posted to threads like this in the past.
"Mark Errors", or "Marked Errors" are intentionally bad sectors on a disc, preventing it from being read/copied properly. The fact that these sectors are only checkable by SOFTWARE, and not by a DVD player, does not deter Vance from repeating his mantra.
I apologize for any hijacking of the thread. Return to your regularly scheduled troubleshooting.

I have never seen so many problems with people with dual burners(mostly Sony) or Pioneer -R burners, I use a HP DVD200I +R burner and except for a couple bumps when I 1st started using it 10 months ago, since then I have not had a +R yet(no matter what brand I use) not burn correctly and then go ahead and play in any DVD player I put it in and I would say I have done around 300 to 350 burns on +R's and another 50 on +RW's.
1st thing the bistsetter setting to burn as DVD-ROM makes it 100% playable in any DVD player/recorder( in the 50 or so I have tried), using Recordnow is a big plus over NERO.
Am I saying the Sony or Pioneer's are bad, NO, just it may be more picky in setting them up and getting the right media to work with them. -
EXACTLY the same story here.
