  1. APEX AD 600 (and 660) used to have a computer DVD-Rom inside with a standard IDE interface. Can anyone point me to a list with Standalone DVD players that have IDE interface + DVD roms (Especially more recent models)?
    Thanks.

  5. Sampo DVE631CF - see here.

There are still a few of these left in circulation (these actually come with two IDE devices - a Compact Flash reader, as well as the loader : as you can imagine, it means you can add anything you want, such as a hard drive !)

I'm just speculating, but I bet that new Liteon DIVX player has an IDE/ATAPI drive inside, seeing as how Liteon is one of the biggest ATAPI DVD-ROM manufacturers.

I' just speculating, but I bet that every newer Apex uses an IDE connected drive. It worked so well with their older machines, kepps costs low, and plays every type of burned or stamped disk you put in it. It would be odd for them to change a working design for no real reason. That said, I haven't opened an Apex in 2 years. You might get better info at http://www.nerd-out.com in their forums. Good luck, let us know what you find.

You're right...I saw a review of the player that someone on this forum did, and the pictures of it showed an LTD-163 DVD-ROM inside the case, which is actually the same drive I have in my PC.

  9. Thanks for help.

Some of the APEX players have, some not. The question is from the existing ones that are currently selling in stores which ones? What I'm looking for is to use the case + the DVD rom inside but to replace the electronic with a computer (fanless miniITX maybe) and get a universal player.
I know I can use a computer shuttle case or any other DVD player's case and replace the DVD rom inside with one for a computer, but I also look to minimize the cost and get a DVD player kind of look&feel.
What about Norcent (you can buy them at $37 ). I would get at that price a case that looks like a player not a computer and a DVD rom that can be connected to the motherboard.
I checked www.nerd-ot.com but I didn't find any player with IDE I can buy in stores. Thare are some good references though.

Now I see what you are doing

I suggest http://www.idot.com for your itx needs.

If you can find an Apex 500wm in the stores, I know this one has an IDE connected drive. It also would give you the room you need to fit everything inside, including power supply. I strongly suggest that you get one of the DC-DC power boards and the AC adaptor to go with it. They save a huge amount of space and noise. The only downside is that they are expensive! It turns out that you can buy an entire case with that powersupply for only about 10 dollars more than the supply alone. The supply inside the Apex will not work for your project, it is lacking several of the needed voltages, and does not have the capacity to drive the DC-DC board.

The Casetronic 2699R is a very sturdy, and compact case made for the mini itx boards. I know you are trying to do this "on the cheap", and most likely have things like hard drive sitting on a shelf. But they really do make a nice package when you buy the case and and drive together. Most of the DVD players will have the drive in the middle of the case. this takes up valuable space, and may not leave enough room for the main board. If you can find one with the drive over at the side of the case, then life will be much better. I suggest you buy the Casetronics case, and use it for parts. Price the power supply, and riser card seperately, and see if you don't come to the same conclusion.

When you get you main board, don't forget to get the PCI riser adaptor! (included with the case!)

If you decide to buy a compact DVD-ROM for a laptop, make sure you know what you are getting. Not all drives connect the same. Though most are using a Mitsumi type of connector, and you will be able to buy an adaptor to connect to your IDE bus. If you buy a drive made for a Compac, you can make an adaptor from the one that they use. It took me a couple of days to figure out, but I know how to make them, and will gladly share the info.

I bought an M-9000 and teamed it up with an HDTV card. it worked great for watching TV. Only down side was that it would not record from analog signals. The card I bought just needed more horsepower to record the analog. You could also use the HDTV card to play out DVD's, although I never tried that.
