  3. There are 3 MPEG codecs thou: MPEG1, MPEG2 and MPEG4 (actually various verisons of MPEG4 exist). You can use either Gspot or Virtualdub to tell you.

Another option is to use the 'analze(sp) MPEG' feature under tools in VCDEasy.

MPEG1 and MPEG2 use the same codec unless you have no MPEG2 Codec installed .. then it would be either windows or qt ...

the point is -- that there is nothing to check in a mpeg 1 or 2 file and the codec used would be the one you have installed ...

avi is a wrapper and can be used to hold (wrap) many different avi file types (about 50) .

mpeg is NOT a wrapper ..

quicktime is also a wrapper ...

there is a lot of diff. between avi and mpeg .. you can even have a mpeg 1 or 2 file wrapped in a avi or qt file ..

Ok.... thanks for the education there everyone.

But why when I play an MPEG in Winamp does it have a dark blue tint?

And when I play the same file in Windows Media Player it says 'requesting codec' then a few seconds laters says 'error downloading codec'... but the movie still plays. The reason I thought it was a codec issue was I use to not have this problem but I recently had to redo my system (winxp pro) and now have been having some sporatic issues convering mpeg's to DVD's.

And I know these are MPEG's because most are svcd's that I extract the MPEG from then combine multiple MPEG's into one before running through TMPGEnc.

it radical -- but i would say remove all mpeg2 codecs from your system (you can use dxman to do this or add/remove if you can )

then just install 1 mpeg2 codec ... install powerdvd (even just the demo)

dont know about playing mpegs in winamp ...

media player 8/9 is crap anyway ..

use mediaplayer classic or many say ZOOM player is very good ..
