  1. I recently recorded old vhs home movies onto dvd using a shelf unit dvd recorder

I would like to be able to edit these dvds, i.e. edit out a small part of static or blank area

I can rip the dvd to my hd but how do I convert it to a mepg so I can then edit out the parts I want to get rid of?

  2. Get TMPGEnc DVD Author. It can import the DVD with chapter points and you can then edit out anything you want and add or subtract chapter points etc. Awesome program. 30 Day trial available I think.

(That's pretty amazing when i posted this I didn't create a url link for the program I mentioned but it happened automatically. Cool!)

  5. You can rename the VOBs to MPG and that is likely to work (esp with home authored media) but it's not the best way.

    You have several choices.

    1) De-mux VOBs to m2v(video) and ac3(audio, might be PCM/WAV). You can do this with pretty much any ripper but for SmartRipper:

    2) Rip DVD then use DVD2AVI to generate a D2V file (might need to apply VFAPI codec to the D2V file) and wav file. Edit frameserved avi with most programs

    3) Pick a DVD authoring program that can accept VOB files and edit

The problem with just renaming the VOB files to MPG is that VOB files can have several audio (and multiple angles) muxed. All kinds of audio problems can result. It's like renaming a VCD's DAT file to MPG. Yeah it 'works' but it's not an ideal solution. You should use vcdgear et.al. to re-generate a MPEG1 file.
