  1. Is it possible to add chapters without having to re-encode the mpeg2 from a video capture card?

    Thx,

Most of the Authoring programs do that but they produce
VOBs. You will have to extract the Mpeg back from them.

  3. Forgive me for my ignorance. Let me explain what I am trying to do. I am trying to decide what I need to buy in order to capture live satellite block feeds and break the blocks into chapters and burn it to a disk. I was asking about standalone dvr verses video capture over in the capture forum but need some better info on the adding of menu/chapers.

I am trying to produce a finished dvd in the least amount of time. The capture card can do mpeg2 encoding realtime. So it stores a finished mpeg2 file on my hdd. This is where I get lost. From what I understand that if I have to re-encode the file it will take a lot of time. So, I assume that if I can add a menu with chapters without having to re-encode it would be ready to burn.

I don’t actually own any capture/edit/burn hardware/software and don’t want to through away good money on something that is going to take 4hr per hour of film to encode.

  4. Ok so you want to capture directly to MPEG2, authoer then burn. No problem. Once you have your MPEG2 source you have to author, this is where you generate menus, chapters, extras, etc.

So the answer to your question is yes. Authoring also takes some time, you have to generate all the VOB files and generating 4GB of data takes 5-15min (depends on CPU). Burning at 4x takes 12-15min.

Encoding varies a lot with CPU and source. My old AMD 2400XP encodes MPEG2 video using CCE at ~0.7x source runtime per pass. My even older AMD k6-2 500 encoded MEPG1 video CBR at ~18.9x source runtime

  5. Can this be done with just any authoring software? I dl'd a trial of movie factory but dont currently have any mpeg2 to test but it took about 40 min to make and iso of an mpeg-1 file i have but it had no audio after it was done.

Could you recommend an authoring softwere?
