  1. Hi all,
    How long should it take to burn a full DVD movie or data disc at 4X ?
    I`m using a pioneer 105, tried various brands of disc & record now max or Nero.
    At selected 4X it takes 45-50 mins.
    Is this normal or should it be faster ?

    cheers.

  2. About 15 minutes for 4x, 30 for 2x, and 60 for 1x. What burner do you have and what media (and speed) did you burn?

  3. your speed sounds a little slow, are you burning at 4 speed and getting an hour ?

    I suppose that one thing to try is to defrag your hard disk before burning. (preferably before ripping it even).

    Im not sure if this would make it that slow though.

    Daznic, are you including the ripping time in the time you have listed? The reason I ask is because that is dependent on your video card and processor, not the burner. 15 minutes would be right for actual "burn" time for each hour of information.

  6. hi,
    the time i am quoting is just for the actual burning, after ripping/compressing,etc.
    I have a pioneer 105, the drive is on an ide channel of its own, win XP, 1.2 Athlon, over 700mb ram.
    Drive is defragged, etc.
    I am selecting 4x in all burning progs, burns ok, no errors - just slow !!
    In record now max, it says 4x selected, burning at 4x

    why so slow though ?

    i wish i could burn in 15 min !

  7. You are using 4x media I assume? Also look in device manager and make sure the 105 drive has DMA enabled.

    Sounds like your stuck in PIO mode instead of DMA mode. Try deleting your controller and re-booting, this will kickstart W2K/XP machines into DMA mode. This is common if you unplugged a CDRW and replaced it with a DVDR drive.

  9. DVD Read/Burn Speeds
    1X = 1,385KB/s burn time ~ 60mins
    2X = 2,770KB/s burn time ~ 30mins
    2.4X= 3,324KB/s burn time ~ 22mins
    4X = 5,540KB/s burn time ~ 15mins
    8X = 11,080KB/s burn time ~ ??mins

  10. I`ve checked all IDE channels are using UDMA so it rules that out.
    I have a dual booting machine, ( 2 win XP installations on seperate drives ) so the next thing i`ll try is installing the burning software on the other & see if there is any difference.

    Cheers !

  11. Yea, I am burning 1x disks and it takes me about an hour, so your not getting 4x for sure.

    Trailsofg you shure

    15 minutes would be right for actual "burn" time for each hour of information.
    Perhaps I missunderstood what you meant?
    I don't have a 4x burner yet, but I thought a full disk was a full disk, so it would be 15 minutes for a full disk regardless of rather it was 1 hour or 2 hours of movie. I try to set all my movies to about 4gig using what ever bit rate fits the time into that size. That's why I ask, since I am thinking about buying a 4x soon.

    Normally I figure go for the highest bit rate and quality that fits a disk without leaving much blank space on it. So a 1 hour movie I would do more at 8,000 bps but a 2 hour would be more like 6,000 or so.
    But either way it's 4gigs and should take the same time to burn right.
    I try to stay around 4 gigs for the highest quality without hitting the end of the disk since I've read some disks have problems at the end. I have cheap ones.

  12. well 45m is faster than 1x, slower than 2x... it's surely a DMA setting or a buffer problem

    try to install PowerDVD,, run his Diagnostic software to make really sure DMA are on (by default, they aren't for me in Win2k)

    also try a burning software that let you see the buffer status (nero do that) if it go lower then 94%, there is a problem...

    or you are burning at 2X and make data verification after.. will give you near 45m

  13. So how do you fix a buffer run that drops below 94%??

    Im having a very similar problem with mine and my buffer when burning with nero ranges from 15%-99%??

    My copies come out ok though. How do I delete the controller????

    make sure that you drive is defragged and that you are not running any other programs in the background.

    Is your burner internal or external?

  17. Are you including verify time if requested?

    The times quoted above are correct for burn times..

  18. Hi guys,
    Well i`ve solved it by installing Record now max on the other side of my dual boot machine, so it`s definately a windows/software problem. It now burns at 4X !!
    As for the other installation i still can`t find the reason for it - DMA is definately activated, i disabled all other progs during burning.
    Looking at the data rate it burns at 4X for about 1 minute then slows down to about 1.5x for the rest of the burn.
    so it looks like its a windows problem but exactly what is a mystery !

  20. NERO just plain sucks at burning DVDs.
    the best software ive found is CopytoDVD,never had one problem with that programme and its engine.15mins max for 4x media,and it burns all media well,including problematic datawrite red4x.
    they dont work on my mates at all,but i can burn one and itll work no problem on his.
    but just wont burn at all on NERO 5.5 and 6.0.11,or play on his dvd players(ps2 ,standalone,etc).
    but if i burn them with my pioneer A05,not 1 single coaster.
    works so well,that we traded discs,i got his datawrite,he gets my infiniti.
