  1. I have used ulead dvd movie factory 2 to capture in DVD form from my Sony TR33. I have used 8000 kbps CBR DVD PAL. It all looks OK to me , but someone has suggested I capture in DV mode first and then use TMPGEnc to convert to MPEG and then read the output created back into ulead DVD's MF 2 to author the menu's , etc.

Question is there are quite a few options in TMPGENC like clip fame/noise reduction settings. Do I tick these boxes ? what values do I put in them or do I leave the suggested ones ?
Then there is the rate control: CBR, VBR, CQ_VBR, etc, etc Which do I use ? Bitrate ? Then there's the advanced settings in the MPGEG section , normally they are all unticked, Do I leave them all ?
The DV capture is from a 60 minute mini dv tape which has created 3 PC files amounting to 9.1GB. Ideally I would like to convert and fit them onto one dvd-r.
    Any advice welcome. Thanks

These will make the encoding process VERY long. Unless you have a real big problem with the noise levels, I suggest you leave these settings alone.

You want to use the bitrate that will allow you to put all of your video on that one DVD-R. Use the project wizard for this.

I would until you learn more about what they do.

  3. after capturing the DV output from my cam I have analysed the files. Uleads video editor is showing the PC files as being 3500 kbps data rate - so is there any point in using a data rate in TMPGEnc of 8000 kbps?

Also just noticed my 30 day mpeg license has run out. I have tried removing the entire program and re-installing with the same results. How's this possible ?

The program has probably saved some information in your registry, for the simple purpose of not allowing you to install the program over and over again as soon as the trial period expires.

Go as high as you can in regards to bitrate. It will NEVER increase the quality but it minimises it greatly.

If you took a 3500 kbit/sec video file and encoded it at a bitrate of 3487654358473954375 kbit/sec (do you like that one?) there will still be a drop in quality but less than if you encoded it at 3500, but damn if anyone could tell the difference between the original and that phenomenally high bitrate.

  6. MiC_, I have cleared all references in the registry with the work TMPGEnc and still I get the expiry date !!!. Obviously that would have been too simple had it worked !!

ROACH1976, if the difference wil hardly be noticeable it might be better to use the 3500 kbit/sec so the file created will be smaller and I may even fit 2 x 60 minute tapes onto 1 DVD .

not all kbps are created equally
The Kbps Ulead studio is referring to are kilobytes, and the Kbps TMPGEnc is referring to is kilobits. a kilobyte is 8 kilobits. so even if you could set TMPGenc to 28000kbps (which you can't, dvd craps out at 9800kbps and MPEG2 MP:ML craps out at 15000kbps) you'd be creating a smaller, lower quality file.

Self shot material -always- needs a high bitrate. i'd suggest not more than 90 minutes a disc for self shot material.

As for the TMPGenc trial, pay the bloody $30 or whatever it is! Requests for ways to crack it will -not- go down well on this board.

  8. So if I understood your comments correctly, you are saying stick with Ulead's product ?

I would buy the product , if I could try it. As I said before I never managed to try it. I would love another 30 days only to try it !

I have head of others praising CCE , being faster and better results. I managed to download this and now have 30 days with this, but here again I am not sure what figures to put in for the data rate, max rate, average rate, etc, etc

If you're confused over what bitrate to use, use a bitrate calculator found in the tools section.
90 minutes of material will fit on a disc if you use 6500kbps CBR, or 6500kbps average on VBR.
