  1. I just re-installed my operating system to increase performance (Haven't done it in a few years) What codecs should I install?
Will nemo light & divx pretty much take care of everything for conversion/authoring?

  4. REALLY!
Well I was using nemo for sometime and I and had some problems with Cleaner XL freaking out and giving errors about codecs. Thats why I asked the question. I thought Nemo was the standard for codecs.

  5. I am nowhere near an expert in this field(but i can hold my own sometimes) but what i have in terms of codecs are

    DIVX
    XVID
    AC3

This is what i have for my codecs and everything works great for me, but YMMV

    You are 100% right!
    I never said it was a "singular"=Codec
I was refering to a complete install of codecs for conversion/authoring.
Just trying to put as less codecs on my system.

  9. i would reccomend the following

    DiVX 5.05
    DiVX 3.11
Lame 3.93.1 or 3.92 (3.93 (IS very buggy)
    AC3 filter
tooLame (Good mp2 codec if u dont want to use the inbuilt one of TEMPEnc..i wud reccoment this)
    XvID codec ( reccomend u use Koepi's Stable )

dont install Nimo Codec Pack..pretty useless..

try Gordian Knot..u might find it useful

and one more thing u must have a software MPEG2 Decoder... is u have any DVD playback software...it shud be there

If you want to have only the codecs you need, and nothing else... why not just install codecs as and when you need them?

Installing loads of codecs on top of each other (e.g. Nemo) often causes more problems than it fixes.

Just install gSpot, and whenever you come across a file that isn't playing, load it into gSpot and it'll tell you what codec(s) you need to get to play/edit that file.

The exception is probably MPEG2 - if you don't already have WinDVD/PowerDVD etc.. a lot of people recommend installing the PowerDVD trial - which leaves the MPEG2 codec in place when the trial expires (there is another freeware MPEG2 codec, which should be linked to above, so have a read about that one too).

    cheers,
    mcdruid.

P.S. If you do want to install a load of codecs at once, bhobho's list is not at all bad to start with (except tooLame is not a codec, but an encoder)

P.P.S. Depending on what you're going to be using it for, you may want to install Real & Quicktime (or the Real Alternative and Quicktime Alternative)

  11. I reckon that the following are "core" after a clean install:

    - DivX 5.0.5
    - Lame MP3 ACPCM codec
    - HuffyUV
    - PicVideo MJPEG codec
    - Panasonic VFW DV codec

XviD and others if you need the functionality.

    Regards.

    Nemo Sucks really bad.

DivX (not neccesarily the spyware 5.05 version, but not 3.xx or 4.xx)
    XviD
    MP3
    AC3
    MPEG2

Now if you capture, then you will want :
    MJPEG
    HUFFYUV
DV (and the convert DV1 to DV2 utility)

If you have a video that jsut won't play, drop it into gspot and take a look. I've found that the 4cc changer helps more than trying to randomly install codecs. If all else fails, get FFDSHOW and try that, but it fights with the native codecs to see who get's to render the video.

  17. Hey, I'd like to add a line. If you plan to capture, try Aware MotionWavelets. Great codec, really. Just surprised how little I hear about it...
