DVD ripping speed and Lite-On

I see posts here stating what speed their DVD-ROM is ripping. How do you do this? I've used DVDInfo for speed testing, but it almost sounds like people are getting real-time speeds while ripping. Is there ripping software that reports real-time ripping speed?

Anyway, I have an older Toshiba SD-M1302 8x DVD-ROM. Based on posts here, I purchased a Lite-On HD166S 16x DVD-ROM from Wal-Mart. Based on the speed test results from DVDInfo, both units max out at ~7.5x. I tested using two different movies (Usual Suspects & We Were Soldiers). Both are operating in Ultra DMA Mode 2. Is this a DVD-ROM problem or is something on my PC holding back the speed, or should I be using different software to test ripping speed?

SmartRipper and DVD Decrypter show you the transfer rate while they do their thing.

Your PC might be running at less than the optimum, IDE devices run better when there isn't a lot of traffic on the bus (so an IDE based drive will occasionally run better if it's got a channel all to itself). UDMA has a bearing on the results you will see, as will the speed of your hard disks (can they keep up ?), processor speed to some small extent, cleanliness and quality of the disc you are trying to rip...

7.5x is pretty normal for a DVD9 discs or dual layer DVD.

I tried one of my kid's DVDs (30 min video). The Lite-On did reach 14x.

I didn't know DVD9 disks could not be ripped at high speed (>8x). I guess I'll stick to my older Toshiba 8x DVD-ROM.

The liteon is the fastest there is. Its the fact that on layer switches it slows it down. Thats true on any reader. That 8x will be lucky to achieve 4 or so X on a DVD9.

Speeds tend to go up during the rip and you can rip DVD5 discs faster than DVD9 discs. I've ripped some DVD5 discs at 15.5x! Took <3min total time

For DVD9 discs I get 6-8x. Liteon all the way (waiting for their dual format burner, not the sony OEM they are selling now)
