Hey all!
Here's my method of success!!!
First off, get virtual dub (latest), TMPGEnc (latest), myflix (latest)... if you know where to look, you can find it for free.. s..e..r..i..a..l ahem *grin. and make sure you have the latest divx codecs..
Load up your divx avi in Virtual Dub, go to audio menu, select full processing mode, go to video menu, select direct stream copy, then go file, save wav, enter a save name and click save or ok. whatever... this will extract the audio from the avi into an uncompressed .wav file (usually close to 1gb) for a 1cd divx movie.
close virtual dub when completed, should only take 3-5 minutes to do.
then load up tmpgenc, and load your divx avi under video... then for audio, find the .wav file you just extracted, then load the video cd ntscfilm template or the pal one.. most of the divx I have are ntsc tho..., then go into the settings of the template and double check to make sure 4:3 ntsc 525 line is selected under the video tab, and same thing under the advanced tab, make sure you select 4:3, and on the video tab, select high quality.. everything else can be left the same...
click start... should take about 2.5 hrs.. now you have the whole movie.. prolly 1-1.2 gb large.. so we need to split it...
open up myflix... go file/load mpeg.. find your new .mpg file, then go edit/new edit list
now click the mark in button, then drag the slider to the middle of the movie.. (it will display the frame number).. once you are about in the middle, write down the frame number and click the mark out button.. then click insert clip, and then click generate! myflix will now ask for a file name to save as.. THIS IS IMPORTANT!.. save it with the .vcd extension so that it is vcd compliant. then when your new clip is done.. simply rename the .vcd to .mpg and repeat the process for the second half.. press the mark in button on the frame you left off on.. and then drag the slider to the end of the movie and click mark out.. then click insert clip, then generate, rename the file to .vcd and you are done splitting your movie.. now to burn it!
load up vcdimager (download it if needbe), and convert the 2 new .mpg's to whatever format.. i use bin/cue and burn with fireburner... done.. pop it in the dvd player and you've got a very high quality vcd!!!
I use this method to convert divx dvdrips to vcd.
myflix is the only software that can properly cut a mpg without messing it up or turning the video/audio out of synch.. it's great... remember to rename to .vcd tho and then after it's saved.. chng extension to .mpg.
I hope this helps some newbies.. as it's taken a while for me to find a foolproof method.. and it only takes about 2 and a half hours from start to finish on my computer.. (1ghz 384mb ram)... woohoo
Enjoy!

Dyam, under 3 hours with TMPGEnc... you lucky doGG!
Since you have a dvd rip source, why didn't you just use CCE? It would of been easier instead of using alot of tools. -
Can you play the VCD you burned by using FB in your PC? In my case, the VCDs I burn with FB does not play in the PC; although they play fine both in my DVD and stand alone VCD player. I found that whenever I use FB, the created files have a *.cda extension and no software regognises that format. Even the softwares which recognises the Karaoke VCDs which have .cda extension does not read these FB burned CDs. FB actually burns them as audio file. But for some strange reason VCD/DVD players can read them as video file. My burner is LG CED8120 B. And I use VCD imager 7.10.

hmmm.. I'll have to try the vcd's on pc tonite.. never thought they wouldn't..
I didn't realise 2.5 hrs was that fast.. My theory is that it is because the audio was extracted first.. so it takes less time and is more efficient. But yes it takes 2.5-3hrs depending on the movie.. (this is for a 1cd divx movie)... I've done about 8 movies with perfect results.. if anyone wants, i can post my exact settings in the template.. but they are all the same as the default, except i turn quality to high, and make sure aspect ratio is 4:3 ntscfilm 525 line...
I don't use cce because it kept crashing under win xp...
My setup is:
amd thunderbird 850 oc'd to 1000mhz
284mb pc133
kt7a raid mb
ibm desktar 60gxp 40gb 7200 hd
sound blaster value 2.0
hp 9100i cd writer
pioneer 16x slot dvdrom
asus v7100 geforce 2mx oc'd with blue orbs
19' kds vs190i monitor
winxp
does my theory on the sound make sense? it's fast because tmpgenc doesn't have to do it on the fly? and remember it's video cd, not super video cd, but quality looks same to me and it's standard.
the biggest problem i had when i started out was getting files to split properly.. everyone said to do the .avi first as cutting an mpg was hard, but everytime i try to do the avi, the audio loses synch.. doing the mpg after works perfect for me using myflix and the method described above.
Cheers!

! UPDATE !
Yes, all my vcd's I burned in Fireburner ( i use the cue file for fireburner that vcdimager makes ) work in my computer too...
-
its better to split the file when its a source..so in avi format, just use virtual dub..but you have to change the video and audio setting to direct stream...dunno why virutal dub cant save the settings...if you do that, no more out of sync..because if you dont change the setting, virtual dub somehow uses the full processing for the video and direct stream for the audio..making the final product out of sync..and splitting the virtual dub is easy, no need to use another program...

i get to the mpg cut stage with myfix, when i select a .vcd exstention, it still names it .mpg IE: mymovie.vcd.mpg is this right?
also when i try to make the .bin file with vcdimager it just says err, something about a packet ?
any ideas plz? -
Hence, did you manage to get a full legth movie in divx (about 700megs) on a single cd?
All my movies are in divx and are around 700 megs.

I'm guessing the whole reason he went through the splitting process was because it wouldn't fit onto 1 cd. So, to a related question - what would be a typical multiplication factor for the size of an mpg converted from avi/divx? For example, could you normally take the size of the source file and multiply that by say 1.5 (or whatever it should be) to get an idea of the size of the mpg?

sorry.. forgot about this post...
#1 - the gecko: in myflix.. don't change the file type box to .vcd.. i think that's what you did, leave it to save as mpg (mpeg), and then in the filename box.. type whatever you want to save it as but add ".vcd" to the end of it.. then when it's done.. go take the .vcd off it and put a .mpg that should work..
also, after each cut i write down where the first half left off, then exit out of myflix completely.. load it back up and do the second half.. not sure if you have to .. but that's how i did it..
#2 - so far as conversion ratio goes.. it all depends on how long the movie is.. not the file size of the divx.. for example.. josie and the pussycats divx was 98mins.. it came out just over 1gb as an mpg file..
however... say you have a divx dvd rip that is two cd's.. (2 700mb divx files).. however you open up each file and the run time is 1hr06mins on the first one and 1hr03 mins on the second one.. total playtime of 2hr09mins.. each one you convert will result in an mpg that will fit on one cd.. (~600-650mb) so you see, it is all dependent on play time.. i think the rule of thumb is 1min=10mb.. it's the same with audio cd's. if you've ever burnt a full 74minute cd.. you'll notice the .wav files are actually way over the 650mb file size .. but they all fit onto the cd.. but if you are burning data.. you can only fit 650mb.. hope that maybe clears it up..
So to Kaiman: if your 700mb file is 74mins or shorter in playtime.. yes it will fit on 1 cd.. if it's longer.. you'll have to either lose quality or use two cd's..
let me know if you have anymore troubles...
