Right i d/led a film whats ntsc, it's a svcd, but my stand alone has trouble playing svcds, so what would be best to do? convert it to a ntsc vcd or pal vcd, which would be the better quality?

The best thing to do is to see if the VCD header trick will fool you DVD player into thinking it is playing a VCD while it is playing a SVCD. Other than that, you can encode a sample of NTSC and PAL VCD video, and see which you like best.
