  1. I get crazy error messages:

    1. Access Violation in capture routine.
Virtualdub has intercepted a crash condition in one of its routines.

    or

    2. PANIC: VirtualDub cannot connect to any capture drivers!
I can see a black screen in the VDUB windows as this message comes up.

But, I have WinXP and Mainconcept DV Codec installed and picked as compression. I have a sony firewire DV camera.

why does this not let me capture???

  2. did you try "windows moviemaker" ?
it comes with windows xp (start=> programs=>accessories).

as far as i can remember Virtualdub doesnt support importing DV from a camera, but it can handle the dv AFTER you import it to the computer.
    can someone confirm that ?

but i think moviemaker will let you import from your camera into the computer and edit the avi file.
and i heard its a good idea to upgrade to moviemaker 2.

after you do that you can encode it to whatever format you want
    using an encoder.

Have you looked and posted in the Mainconcept forum and/or e-mailed or called their support staff ?

This is true. I used DVIO or MS MovieMaker to transfer from minidv to the hard drive, then I can use Virtualdub. BTW for some reason when I upgraded to MS MovieMaker 2.0 I was unable to use the transfered avi file. I'm sure it had to do with the type 1/type 2 issue, but I couldn't capture in the virtualdub readable format even after I reloaded the mainconcept codec.

i didnt know it can cause problems, i just heard that moviemaker 2
    has improvments over the original.
might be a good idea to stay with the old version after all.
