People go on and on about this...

You DO realize that once you've ripped the files, there IS NO LAYER BREAK, yeah?

That the "layer break" is, in fact, a HARDWARE artifact as the laser switches layers, and that it has NOTHING to do with the VOBS or the actual data?

If you don't, please raise your hand now so I can explain it using even smaller words.

  2. Gurm, I thought it had something to do with .IFOs (it can be corrected with IfoEdit).
Maybe you need to explain using smaller words.

Gurm that is not correct. Layer breaks are specified in the ifo. The DVD player has to be told to switch to the next layer, and even if there is no second layer, if that break is still in the ifo then the player still pauses to look.

Its not going to be as prominent because the player doesn't actually have to switch layers, but the instruction to search for that next piece of data is still there. Before I realized how easy it was to remove the layer break using IfoEdit, I did several backups without removing it and the pause during that break is very noticable on my dvd player.

Is there a guide that tells you where to find the layer break and how to use IfoEdit to remove it?

    Thanks,

It is also simple to join 2 or more dvds together, just open them all in each window/frame and click re-author and drag the main titles (and extra materials you like) to the new re-author window.
This looks like a great feature for backing up select TV episodes from different discs onto a DVD-R.

Let me understand this... I open a different instance of DVDShrink 3 for each disc? Then, drag main titles to a new re-author window? (Does it matter which instance you do a re-author from?)

Also, if you're using a single DVD-ROM drive, do you insert a disc, let DVDShrink do its quick analysis, then take that disc out & put disc 2 in (then disc 3, etc.)?

  9. Hello, bu-dvdr.

"I open a different instance of DVDShrink 3 for each disc?"

    Yes and no.
Once the main widow is opened and Shrink has done the quick analysis of the first DVD, click on "Re-author" to open a 2nd window (it will not start a 2nd process).
In this window, simply drag&drop titles from the main one.
You can also open other re-author windows and drag&drop titles to the 1st (re-author) one.
"Open Disk" will be available (if you have 2 drives or more, as the discs can not be removed and swapped), or "Open Files" to use ripped files from your hard-drive.
    etc etc
You can open as many re-author windows as you want, and use the same method.
In theory there's no limit as to how many windows are opened, and how many titles added, but I'm sure there must be one in practice.

One word of advice though. Unless you're doing it to test the beta and report bugs, I'd suggest you wait for the final release (2 / 3 weeks time, dvdshrink is very busy with another project).
The re-author feature seem to be buggy and not work properly (for some testers anyway).

Thanks for your explanation ddlooping. I'll wait for the final release.

You said "discs can not be removed and swapped", so it looks like the best way may be to rip for example 3 DVDs to 3 different folders on the hard drive, then drag & drop titles (TV episodes) to the Re-Author window.

This feature is very exciting as DVD2one, DVDFab & others can't do it. There'll be no need to spend the extra time using IfoEdit to make a 'best of' DVD-R with select TV episodes.

It is the easiest, if not fastest way.

I believe that v3.0 is a huge step forward for DVD Shrink, and even though it will not be perfect, it will leave ALL the other all-in-one backup softwares far behind.

  12. Tried to open a file and got an error that said "Failed to open file" The system cannot find the specified file. 2.3 Worked fine. Guess that is why this is beta.

  13. What version of the beta were you using, mikef07?

From beta 2 history: "Fixed bug which always required VIDEO_TS.IFO file to be present, even if you open a VTS_xx_0.IFO file."

  14. I am using beta 3 but I always have opened video_ts rather than vts_01 or whatever ifo. I will try the vts ifo.

I am trying to shrink a DVD and DVDShrink Beta 3 doesn't allow me
to shrink more than 74% (just doing the main movie). Even the "Ratio"
option starts at 74%. As a result of this, I am not able to fit it onto a
DVD+R. Is this a bug? Is there a work around for this?

    Thanks.

    Seens strange.

Mine allows me to shrink all movies to 55%
Might as well report it as a bug.
