  1. I have an ATI All In Wonder 128 Pro and am trying to use VirtualDub to capture to AVI. I'm thinking it might capture better than the ATI software I'm using. I installed VirtualDub and ran it, no problems. But when I tried to "Capture to AVI...", I got an error saying that there's no capture device. I looked up the help page on the site and this is what it says:

VirtualDub says I don't have a capture device, but I know I have one.
VirtualDub needs a Video for Windows capture driver to capture. Most Firewire (DV) devices do not provide a VFW driver, and thus cannot be used by VirtualDub at all. Also, ATI appears to be shipping their current devices with a WDM (Windows Driver Model) driver only; this can be used indirectly by VirtualDub through a Microsoft wrapper, but it is crippled in functionality and it also appears that the wrapper is buggy.

I don't understand what this says at all. What do I need to do to get VirtualDub to capture using my ATI card?

  3. Which drivers and MMC are you using? To have a real VFW driver for capturing using VirtualDub on an ATI AIW 128 Pro, you must use the 6292 drivers located here:

    http://support.ati.com/products/pc/rage128pro/winme/rage128pro_winme_drivers_vfw.html

AND you MUST install ATI MMC 6.3 so that the VFW capture driver is installed.

When you use VirtualDub for capturing, you should see that an ATI Multimedia Driver is installed under capture devices.

  5. Try installing web tv for windows from the ME disk (control panel add/remove programs windows setup tab).
works for me w/any drivers and any version of MMC7.0/7.1.
also the leaked 7184 drivers ( http://www.rage3d.com ) seem to give me much higher res caps w/fewer drops.

  6. I have Win2000 installed and I can capture with VirtualDub1.4.7. (last version) and PIC MJPEG.
I tryed Huffy too and this codec gived me a better quality.

The picture quality is really better than in MMC.

For VfW support I used suggestions on http://www.virtualdub.org/virtualdub_news_old.html.

    Radeon64VIVO, WIN2000, SP2, DirectX8.0a with video putch.

  7. I have Windows 98 and don't have access to ME, so how can I go about installing something that will make my VirtualDub use my ATI card? Is there a place online I can download the driver that I need? By the way, I downloaded the newest versions of all the drivers including the MMC, I think it's version 7.1 but not at home now so I can't check it. But is there a place online I can download those drivers at?

  8. Yes, I would also like to use VirtualDub with my ATI AIW128 card but again VDub says it can't find a capture device. Are there any decent drivers that I can load that will enable me to use both MMC 7.1 and VDub together??

  9. Unfortunately using the newer drivers and MMC7.1 does not include a VFW driver, only a VFM-WDM wrapper, which is not as good. For those wanting to download MMC6.3, look here:

    http://www.lidotaxi.cz/atimmc.htm

I have made 2 hour captures using Huffy at 720x480 with around 2-4 frames drops only!(I have alot of HD space)

Remember MMC6.3 will not work with the ATI AIW Radeon!

  10. I went there and all the files are in .rar and .r01 and so on format. I've never seen this format before, what exactly am I supposed to do with those files to make them work with my system?

  11. RAR files is just another compression format like WINZIP. Just download all the files and decompress them (by clicking on the file with the .rar extension) by using WinRAR. (which I am sure you can find on your own)

  12. in win98/se/me you can use drivers 4.12.6292 with the AIW 128/128 Pro and get both vfw and wdm (directshow) support. install 4.12.6292, then MMC 6.3, then MMC 7.1 into a new directory. then add the DVD 4.1 update from ati's website, and you'll have good AVI under virtualdub, quality realtime MPEG under MMC 7.1. MMC 6.3 may or may not be useable after installing 7.1 (i think it captures but you can't change the settings) but don't remove it, since it contains part of the vfw capture drivers

    Thanks MIV and Patrick.

However, I´m still in trouble. VirtualDub is now running. However, if I use |ATI Multimedia Video driver,I´m able to captureat 640 X 480, but I ONLY see PicVideo Wavelet 2000 Codec, although Huffyu is installed.
If I change the driver to Microsoft WDM Image Capture, I see Huffyu, but max resolutionfor capturing turns to be 352 X 288.

Do you guys have any idea of what´s going on?

  14. Hey flav,

when in VirtualDub capture mode, make sure you pick the ATI Multimedia Driver then go to video>>format. Then pick YUY2 Packed Data and then see if you can pick other compression formats.

  17. Just wanted to let you know I tried all this last night and it worked beautifully. The AVI files I capture then convert to MPG are so much more beautiful than the MPG files I captured using the ATI software. VirtualDub rules, and so do you guys for helping me through on this one. I just need to get the sound to sound better, and I'm going to try a new sound card tonight, wish me luck!

  18. Hey mikewg,

What sound card are you using? If the sound is too low when capturing try increasing the volume of the line-in in the volume control panel. I have noticed when going into VirtualDub's capture mode it automatically sets the line-in volume to halfway.

  19. First, install DirectX 8.0a, the DirectX 8 DV update, and Windows 2000 Service Pack 2. SP2 is mandatory, because it includes a file that you may not have. Once you have it installed, check for a file called \WINNT\ServicePackFiles\i386\vfwwdm32.dll. Copy it to \WINNT\System32\vfwwdm32.dll, if a file by that name doesn't already exist there.

Next, open up Registry Editor (regedit.exe), and drill down to:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\MediaResources\msvideo
Create a key called MSVideo.VFWWDM, and in it, create the following entries:

    Name Type Data

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Description REG_SZ Microsoft WDM Image Capture (Win32)
    Driver REG_SZ vfwwdm32.dll

The Microsoft VFWWDM wrapper should now appear as a usable capture device in VFW-based capture programs. Another method is to try the following strings in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion:

    Name Type Data

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    drivers.desc\vfwwdm32.dll REG_SZ Microsoft WDM Image Capture (Win32)
    Drivers32\msvideo REG_SZ vfwwdm32.dll

If msvideo already exists, use msvideo1, msvideo2, etc. With this method you will most likely get two video capture entries, one that works and one that doesn't. If this occurs, check to see if the MSVideo.VFWWDM key has been created; if it has, back out the second patch and apply the first.

I have not attempted to do this under Windows 98 SE, but if you happen to have vfwwdm.drv or a similar file, you might try adding it to [drivers] in system.ini as msvideo=vfwwdm.drv or similar.

The surprising part about this is that once you get the wrapper going, the performance is actually not too bad: I get 720x480 UYVY, compressed to Huffyuv, at 29.97 fps with about 50% CPU usage. That's about on-par with what I get from my WinTV. The WinTV overlay occasionally causes hangs with the Radeon, but I'm using an old version of the WinTV drivers (3.02), and in any case, Preview works fine. So, with my webcam, that makes three capture devices in my system now. Trust me when I say that VirtualDub is designed to work with multiple capture devices installed.

  20. I have a Muse sound card, it was like $30 at Best Buy about 6 months ago. I've tried playing with all the sound settings and it still just sucks. It's not a question of volume, but moreso a question of pure quality. It has a muffled sound over it, which I can only attribute to the sound card not processing the sound correctly. You can hear what I'm talking about, I posted a soundclip at http://www.yourgiftstore.net/testclip.mpg

  21. OK, I have done all that in W2K, and it works, but I can't capture sound! I have the cable plugged in correctly, and I can hear sound through the capture window before and during capture, but when I play back the cap - no sound.

I can cap sound in ATI's SW, no prob (except for a slight sync issue, which I fix in VDub).

I have checked the 'Capture Audio' box in VDub.

    Any Suggestions??
