Hey,
I was jsut burning my dvd, and i have no subtitle or caption option. I was jsut wondering how do you give your dvd the caption or how do you give your dvd a subtitle option such as turning it on or off. I don't like subtitles and all but when other people borrow my dvd they want or need the subtitle i was jsut wondering how do u enable it to be able to turn on or off such as a store bought dvd. Thank you for your time and have a nice day.

Subtitles have to be muxed into the VOB files when you author. Several programs can do this: DVD Maestro, Scenarist, Reel DVD and IfoEdit. There might be others but those are the only ones I know off. All of them expect IFOEdit (freeware) cost a lot (Reel DVD is the cheapest at $600).
You can either use someone elses subtitles or make your own. If you're using someone elses you just d/load them (or rip) convert to the correct format for your authoring program and you're pretty much done.
Making your own subtitles is normally done using a few programs:
SubStation Alpha - allows you to time text files (containing desired subs).
MaestroSBT - converts SSA files into a series of BMP files and generates a timed script file to use in authoring
Various subtitle converison tools (normally to generate a SUP format subtitle file which is supported by IFOEdit the one freeware program).
You can d/load all of these at http://www.doom9.org they also have some subtitle converison guides there. -
So, If i do this i will have the option of turning it on or off when im playing the dvd right?...do you have like a guide cause im not sure of how to use the programs and do this stuff.

Yes, MPEG2 video (CVD, SVCD and DVD) support selectable subtitles. That is you can turn the subs on or off when ever you choose. Note that if you author with IfoEdit there will be no menu. So you either have to turn the subs on with your remote or set them to autoplay (either way you can turn them on/off latter if you choose).
If you author with DVD Maestro or one of the better authoring programs you can make a menu and select various audio & sub streams there (like a commerical disc).
I don't know of anyone guide that covers all this. You'll have to look around here and doom9.org to find everything. There is no one correct way to do this. I use DVD Maestro, if you only have freeware tools you need to 'think/plan ahead' a bit more and process stuff a lot more, but you can often get the same results (just need to use several programs and play around a lot). To get started thou:
To author a DVD with IFOEdit (and other freeware tools):

To author with DVD Maestro a good guide is:

To author with Scenarist:

General (but not inclusive) guides to ripping/editing subs:

thanks for the reply and help. One last question though, i used cladDVD.net to rip my dvd movies and it comes out into a vob file, wav audio, and .d2v file. My dvd broke already and stuff so i threw it away...is it still possible to put the subtitle option?
