Ok,
So I have read most of the reviews and comments of various burners here the past several weeks. I am going to buy either a Sony DRU510a, DRX510ul (external), or the Pioneer A06. Or, I am not in a great hurry,
I could wait until Fall and either let the price drop some, or get a 6x-8x (if Sony or Pioneer has them coming)
Here's the deal, I have a nice credit at CompUSA, and I am not too concerned about price. I read about some of the failures in the Sony510a (seemed to be more than the A, or AX). I liked the thread on 'video quality' of the AO6. I am sure it is more a function of the encoding and authoring tools, but there seemed to be some consenses the Pioneer actually helps 'clean up' some Video stuff. Is this true of the Sony? I am a fan of all things Sony. At the risk of much OT, I would like feedback helping me go one way or the other.
Several points: I will be using the drive externally for now, with firewire rather than USB. I like the transferability between different systems on my network, with an external. The Sony DRX seems like a nice choice here. It actually would be cheaper with my credits, than getting the internal and putting it in an external ADS box, which is what I would use. There are only two reviews currently on this unit here. Why is it is-too expensive? Aslo, If you get an internal and put it in a case, you can upgrade to a different drive later, and put it in the external case-or, put it internally if you so choose. Is there any downside to the external option? Everything I have ever used externally (Iomega products, drives, etc.) do not seem to work as well as internal.
So its, Sony or Pioneer, internal or external, and if external-with a removable box or the Sony DRX (it has a fixed case I understand)
Ok the truth, I bought the Sony DRX, because there was a $30.00 rebate through July 31st, but have not opened it pending research. I have a week left to return it, or exchange it without a restock fee if unopened.
If it matters, I will be using more for Video Editing, than DVD copies, etc. Any help would be appreciated.

Unless you have a defective burner which is unlikely..then you will be a very happy camper. -
Defense,
Are you using the drive with USB2.0 or firewire? Also interested any any of your personal comments about media compatibility, and why you chose this drive?Milt -
@ Milt, I have the internal DRU-500AX not the external...so I don't use USB or Firewire...however, I assume your un-opened Sony is the external? If so, firewire as you know has it's positives and negatives. It not necessarily so much better then USB from what i've read...but either way..you'll be a very happy camper.
As for the Sony burner itself and why I chose it. Well, I don't want to go into great detail but I'll tell you this much. Since I was a kid i've always liked Sony products...always noticed they were far superior then other brands...such as with WalkMan's DiscMan's.....whatever. So I have always been loyal to Sony because of how solid their products are. I have about 5 Sony products that I use regularaly and have had for over 10 years and they work like BRAND NEW! To name a few..I have a Sony VCR, CD PLAYER, TAPE DECK, TUNER, etc...etc. And what makes this amazing is that these products are over ten years old and are rock solid! I mean this Tuner I have which is Dolby Pro Logic is just incredible...I also have a Sony Dolby Digital Tuner but the Pro Logic Tuner was clearly ahead of its time when I got it and it even has functions that tuners today don't have. You want to talk about more amazing...the Sony 5 disk CD carosel I have freakin' plays EVERY MP3 DISK I'VE EVER THROWN AT IT. Any brand of disk and type of CD....it doesn't matter...it plays them and loads up QUICKLY...MANY "DVD" manufacturer's can't even say their DVD players TODAY will play MP3's...especially not in the fashion that this SONY CD PLAYER DOES. What's amazing about that is that MP3s' CD BURNING wasn't prevalent damn near 11 years ago.....so you gotta imagine what kind of laser is in this bad boy. Sony is just ahead of their time as you can see. That's why they are the biggest electronics Giant in the world and they are the innovators. Others' duplicate..but Sony Innovates...and that's why I chose the Sony Dual-Format DVD burner. They were the first to release a multi-format burner and I trusted it would be spectacular just like damn near everything else Sony makes.
And i'm going to be very honest when I say that this DVD BURNER is absolutely the best piece of electronics equipment i've ever purchased. It's worth it's weight in OUNCES in GOLD! I'm not going to knock other DVD Burner manufacturers....but there's no way another burner is better then the Sony...no way.....it's simply as close to perfection as a DVD Burner can be.
If you do research you may see some people who say their Sony burners have died on them...but beware...do a search for Pioneer burners and you'll see even more people have posted their Pioneers crapped out on them. Things happen with electronics and neither of the top two most popular burners, the Pioneer or the Sony have many issues regarding anything....and If there was any reason at all which would show the Pioneer burners were better, i'm not biased just because I own the Sony..I tell it like it is.....but The Sony Burners are the best way to go.
And as far as media goes...if you want a detailed list...PM me...but one thing about the Sony burners are they are pretty much compatibile with every piece of media out there. Other burners apparently give you all kinds of messages with certain types of media..such as "illegal media" which the NEC-1300 apparently does. If you want the best list of media though...PM ME.
If you have any other questions as well, feel free to PM me.
Good Luck
