I have a controller card, Abit I think.
It has space for four devices, two of which have IDE HDD's in.
I've tried to add a DVD-Rom drive to one of the spare slots but it isn't recognised.
Is it unique to the controller card I have, ie. will this only accept HDD's, or do I just need to configure it differently?
Will

Will,
I have had some trouble with my daughter's machine, could not get it to see the CD burner, when I attached it to IDE2, "second master not ATAPI compatible".
Finally had to add an ATA100 expansion card, and when the card comes up, " Detecting ", it posts a CD-ROM on that card.
It will see an optical drive, in fact any IDE-ATAPI drive, as they are, basically the same thing. Mine is a Promise, yours an Abit, but should not matter.
I assume the drivers are installed?
Cheers,

Will,
As a post script, there has been the odd occassion that the only way I could get a drive recognized was, in properties>settings, check "Removeable"; it has worked, even tho' it was a permanent install.
