I was looking through the newbie discussion board and didn't really found any thread that could answer my question. I transfer a 2 hr video recording to my computer. Then I tried to put it on a dvd-rw but it would only allow me to fit in 1hr of video. I have a Sony-DRu 510. So, I'm pretty much just using the software that came with it. the program are Record Now 4.5 and Sonic My DVD. Is there any program that would allow me to somehow fit in the entire 2 hr video? Thanks in advance for your time and help.

  2. Here's the thing. SP/LP/EP are for VHS and analog media ONLY. Digital media doesn't have these 'modes.' Take a look to the left under 'what is DVDR'. The DVD Standard calls for:

    MPEG2 Video at either 720x480,352x480 or 352x240
    AC3 or PCM audio
    Max bitrate 10.8Mbit/s

There is no minimum bitrate stated. You can store 4.3GB of data on each DVDR disc. The size of your MPEG2 file is controled by two (and only two) factors:

    Runtime and bitrate

Resolution, size of source, which program you use, etc. doesn't matter. The higher the bitrate and resolution the better the quiality of your encode. So what most people do is look at the runtime of the video they want to fit on a DVDR and then pick the highest bitrate that will fill the DVD.

You can get this number from a bitrate calculator (see the tools section to left). Most people like to use bitrates between 4500~8000kbit/s. Below 4500kbit/s you should consider lowering the resolution to 352x480 (i personally do this for encodes lower than 6000kbit/s).

Hope this helps some. The rest is basically covered in the guides.

Well, I bought 25 pack Memorex +R DVD media recently and I've noticed
SP, LP, EP times on the label. If Vejita-sama is right in saying its only
for analog media then what is it doing on DVD media?

I also wanted to know this for some time now. I can post the image
of that label if you want...

  4. I think some of the entry level authoouring apps have bitrate presets called EP LP and SP, but they are just different bitrate settings.

  5. The XP/SP/LP/EP modes are used on DVD Video Records for XP=1hr at 720x480, SP=2hrs at 704x480, LP=4hrs at 352x480 & EP=6hrs at 352x240 recording modes.

  6. jn123 and lal:

the reason some discs state "SP, LP, EP" is because these modes are commonly used on the standalone DVD recorders. SP is 2 hours, LP is 3 hours, EP is 4 hours (i think! - could be wrong on these specs.)

the standalone DVD recorders simply write to the disc at a lower bitrate for the LP and EP modes, meaning a longer playing time but a lower quality.

remember: what you can fit on a DVD is not measured in minutes of video. it's measured in gigabytes and megabytes of video.
