I want to re-do completely a home DVD and need to extract the mpeg file (or files), I've tried TMPGEnc, FlaskMPEG and others and they crash
It's a simple mpeg2 file because there's just one audio track and no subtitles.
    Help please!

  2. VOB files ARE MPEG2 files, they are multiplex MPEG2 files contain: video, audio and subtitle stream/s. You have to de-mux the VOB files to m2v (video) and ac3 (audio) files. Several programs can do this.

The most popular being either SmartRipper or DVD Deecrypter (you d/load to the left under tools). For SmartRipper you:

    1) Place DVD in DVD-Rom drive
    2) Run SmartRipper
    3) Choose the VTS of in interest
    4) Click on stream processing
    5) Click on 'enable stream processing'
    6) Select the stream you want to click de-mux (you have to do this for EACH stream, ie. click video then demux, then click audio and de-mux).
    7) Hit run

This will de-mux the VOB files into seperate m2v and ac3 files.

    What do you AUTHOR using?

    because DVDLAB, TMPGAUTHOR
and DVD ARCHITECT accept VOB's directly
only problem, if you have more than one VOB go back a step and ripo in the mode wher your project is ONE BIG FILE
(watching out for 4gig file limit in 98)

Thanks for your replies, I'm working on it.
I haven't the project files since it's a DVD I made some months ago.
Trying to demux them, then re-edit.
One of the things I have to do is changing its format from NTSC to PAL.

I have seen in many other posts that you can just rename the vob extension to mpg and the file will be fine for editing, ect....

However, if that doesn't work you can use SmartRipper the demux and then us TMPGEnc to re-mux(multiplex) using it's mpg tools option.

  6. Can the downloaded version of TMPGEnc re-mux the seperate video and audio files into 1 single Mpeg2 file by itself, or do you have to purchase something seperate from TMPGEnc to activate the ability to re-mux??? Sometimes companies make you pay for extra features.

  8. You may have problems if are using FAT or FAT32. Video files extracted from DVD are usually bigger than 4Gb

I have had to do this a bit lately

DVD Movie Factory II (ULEAD) extracts the source MPEGS from a created DVD.

    Open DVDMF

Click on EXTRACT (I think , its not in front of me)

It will put them in the DVDMF working folder, so if you had 3 original it will create FILE 1 , 2 and 3. Copy them off because if you close MF I think they go away.

Really easy. Same reason, I needed to omit a clip and reauthor.

It worked fine with DVD Decripter demux, then Multiplex with TMPGEnc, my HD is in NTFS format and did it in one big file.
    I'll try UDMF2.
    Thanks everybody.

  11. I too have explored a number of ways to do this not only accurately, but quickly as well. Here's the method I have found that works best:

    1. Using DVD Decrypter, I rip only the video and audio tracks I need. These usually consist of the video, AC3 and DTS tracks. I rip these to a SINGLE VOB file. You can also have DVD Decrypter generate a file for IfoEdit that includes the cell times for chapters if you'd like to include them. This process greatly simplifies demuxing and eliminates any chances of AV sync issues.

    2. Using BBTools, I demux the VOB into the MPEG2 and AC3 tracks. If available, I demux the DTS track as well. This requires 3 different jobs using BBDmux, but it only takes about 5 minutes to accomplish and obtain all three (.m2v, .ac3, .dts) streams. Tip: Get AVIGUI. It makes using the command line BBDmux SO much easier.

    3. Using IFOEdit, I simply add my video and audio streams. IFOEdit is the only DVD authoring app I've found that can author DVDs with both AC3 and DTS audio tracks. I also add the file generated by DVD Decrypter to include the chapters from the original. Tip: Make sure you rename this file "CellTimes.txt" before adding it to IFOEdit or else IFOEdit will choke.

    4. Let IFOEdit do it's thing and your left with PERFECT DVD directories with multiple audio tracks AND proper chapters.

    5. I use Nero to burn to DVD. Make sure that NO ISO restrictions are relaxed and you'll have a DVD that plays on just about any setup box.

As I mentioned, this is a process that I have kind of stumbled upon trying to author DVDs with multiple audio tracks. If anyone else can offer a better/faster way of doing things, by all means, POST IT!

use VobEdit to demux vob to elementary streams. Then mux with mplex or tmpenc.
    SVCD2DVD v2.5, AVI/MPEG/HDTV/AviSynth/h264->DVD, PAL->NTSC conversion.

  13. Here's what I would do and have done and it works.

    1. Decrypt using DVDDecrypter into 1 VOB.

    2. Rename the VOB to MPG

    3. Bring it into Authoring prog (Ulead DVD Workshop) Add chapters and menu to the MPG. (you will not hear the sound in Ulead, but it's still there, it can't play AC3 sound) make sure ULEAD does not modify the MPG, click Finish and sit back for about 40 minutes as it does it's thing and now you're done.

I used to do it this way, but I've found that despite all the mux/demux going on with the process I described, it's still MUCH faster the DVDWS method.

    Just my "additional" 2 cents

  15. Renaming VOB files to MPG files is NOT a good idea. Yeah it will work most of the time but not all of the time. Esp if english is not the first language (eg. directorys commentary), if you need to retain forced subs, etc. Also for multile angled disc this is going to create a mess.

It's worth the few extra steps to do it 'the correct way' But it sounds like everyone is just trying to make a movie only backup. If that's the case forget about de-mux/re-muxing. Just use IfoEdit (or DVD Shrink if you don't like IFOEdit).

See the DVD Rip guides to the left (or at doom9.org). Basically you load the VTS IFO file with the main movie, click on VOB extras, choose the audio and sub stream you want to save, select the VOB IDs, click run.

IFOEdit then generates a new VIDEO_TS folder with just the VOB IDs of the main movie and the audio/sub streams you selected to keep. (if backing up and still to large you can send this folder to DVDShrink, DVD2one, IC, etc.)

  16. But once you split the vob into the video and audio.. ulead mf 2 wont recognize the ac3 audio?

how do you work around that??

  17. I don't go through any of these changes. After I copy the vob files to my HD, I rename the files to a mpeg extention. Then open in my video editor.

It will work in most cases, but not if the vob have several audio tracks and you want to choose which one to use.

(edit, just noted that Vejita-sama had mentioned it already)
