Hey I need to extract the mpeg from a vob file while retaining all the original data (no encoding) so that I can edit the mpeg in TMPGEnc (cut and join parts). I tried Virtualdub but it can't output into mpegs and you can't convert an mpeg2 into an avi without encoding (can you?). Any help appreciated.

  2. VobEdit will do exactly what you want. (takes ~3-4 minutes for that process)

Tmpeg "simple multiplex' will convert a vob directly to mpeg without encodeing. VobEdit can demultiplex but I don't believe it will multiplex into mpeg.

But you may end up with fragmented files due to chapter marks.
You need to remove VOB garbage in addition to normal MPEG demuxing.
For this, VobEdit all the way.

TMPGEnc will only de-multiplex a VOB to separate audio and video.
These have to be re-muxed into a MPEG2 system stream.
    Same with VobEdit.

  9. How about trying TMPGEnc DVD Author program, it'll let you add a dvd and then you can cut and edit that dvd. This sounds like what you are trying to do??

For example doing this you could sanitize a movie for child viewing to your preference, IE remove scenes with violence, nudity & or Language.

Only thing is it'll have to be ripped to your hard drive if a commercial disk you own, or if it is one you made, then I'd still do it for the speed of moving through the video while editing.

And of course you can also edit a dvd this way and if it has room add more content. Neat program with 30 day trial.

Hope this helps, let the forum know how you make out.

    Good Luck

I have converted hundred's of vob files directly to mpeg with TMPEG without any problem. On only one occasion did vob files date stamp cause a problem, never had a problem with chapter stops. On that one occasion I converted as an SVCD complianr stream instead of mpg2 stream. TMPEG will in fact demultiplex and multiplex a vob file despite the ac3 audio.

I just tried an experiment to save time.
I entered the same VOB file for the audio and the video
    in TMPGEnc multiplex function.
It produced a nice MPEG2 file in one operation.
Looks like you don't have to de-multiplex first.

dunno about AC3, my file had MP2 audio

  12. I think the tmpgne will work to create the mpeg.. but ulead mf2 wont work with the ac3..

there has to be a way to create a mpeg from a vob that will work in ulead mf2. Im to the point now of trying to find something to buy and use.
