  1. What happens if you don't set the number of gops for DVD pal (15)

Would you have play back probs on a standalone but it would play fine on a PC what would you expect to happen?

I think PAL limit is 12, but could be wrong. Maybe it is 15.
Maybe it's just PAL suggestions to go 12 due to 25fps/50hz.
I know NTSC is 18, but suggested to go 15 due to 30fps/60hz.

Anyway, too many GOPs will prevent playback.
That's not a DVD video file at that point.

Max GOP size is 15 frames ( 30 fields) for PAL, and 18 frames (36 fields) for NTSC. If you set it too high, you only risk the chance that your standalone player won't play it.
Impossible to see the future is. The Dark Side clouds everything...

I would guess the Gop is the problem. i had trouble with TMPGEnc accidentally creating the odd 16 frame GOP, and my authoring software just booted it straight out.

If you have the full version of Bitrate Viewer, you could actually determine your GOP struture. Or, load your file into ReMPEG2 and check its log - I believe that it reports the GOPs.

If you don't have a compliant GOP structure, no authoring package should even accept it (GOPs are not optional for DVDs).

Yeah, you "night-timers" have a problem with time!
