Hi,
Does anyone have a recommendation to remove the border from a mpeg-2 file. I can rip the movie to dvd using TMPGEnc, and everything is fine.
When I try and use TMPGEnc Author to clip the board, it seems to hang up (on a large file). I need to clip the boarder, to make the file cleaner, and I also need to do it on large files.
Any software suggestions? I have only seen TMPGEnc Author with this feature. I would like it for mpeg-2 but would also take this feature on other formats if not available for mpeg-2.
THANKS,
Judy

hi judy,
we'd have to know what your source is really... is it a DVD which you've ripped - so you're working with the vobs?
If so, I'd recommend the vDub mod which can handle vobs.
It cannot handle multiple vobs, so you have to rip your source as one vob (e.g. use SmartRipper and set 'file splitting' so it produces one big vob)
You can then open the vob with the vDub mod, and use the resize filter.
The frameserve back to TMPGEnc if that's what you want to do.
If you clarify your intentions, we might be able to help more (i.e. what is your source? what format to you want to end up with?)
cheers,

Hi,
Thanks for the reply.
I am looking to edit this in a mpeg-2 format, and keep it in a mpeg-2 format.
I origionally ripped the dvd (from vob's) into a mpeg-2 format, and that is fine, it is the clipping of the boarders which is a problem.
So this, vDub mod will remove the borders then? I will look at it tonight. Thanks for your suggestions. I can either edit in vob, or mpeg-2, I just never found a good vob editing software, and the one I found for the borders, would not take a vob format.
The source is a DVD from a stand alone unit. (ie more than one vob file)
Thanks for your help, will try it tonight,

hi judy - the vDub mod will not work on multiple vobs, so you'd have to merge them somehow - SmartRipper might well let you do it.
I don't think, however, that your video would be staying in MPEG2 format - it would be re-encoded (which may well cause some loss of quality).
Because of the way MPEG video works, it's hard to edit without changing to a different format - someone else might be able to recommend some software that allows you to crop/resize the MPEG directly - but I'm not aware of any.
If you do use the vDub mod, use null transform filter to crop the image, and the resize if you need to after that.

DVDDecrypter will allow you to rip the VOB's from the original DVD into one large file.
I hope that someone can prove me wrong on the border issue, but you will have to reencode the file. If you reencode, aside from the loss in quality from the reencode, you may have a loss in quality based on the bit rate of the source.
