I have been under the impression that jerky playback on my standalone was due to buring errors or media. I have rechecked the mpeg after using TMPGenc and notice that the jerky (glitchs) have been introduced during the encoding and are not on the original avi. I have an Athlon 1800, 384m RAM and 60gb HD, Windows XP. Could the glitchs have been due to background process? Any thoughts?

You can try pulling up task manager while you are encoding to see if your cpu is being maxed out and to see what processes are using the cpu cycles. That will help some. Also, take a look at your HD LED while you are encoding to see if it is continuously lit. It could be that your HD is thrashing and can't keep up.

  3. what settings are you using to encode the avi ?
if its ntsc( 29.97) you are using, than try using
    ntscfilm templete (23.97 - internally 29.97).
with pal movies you shouldnt have a problem because pal is
    allways 25 fps.

your computer is not the problem, i have done encodings while using the computer and it NEVER caused a problem in the mpeg.
the encoder uses the video frme by frame so i dont think it can cause
    the problem you are having.

i whould say its the settings you use in the encoder.

    Yes, field order.

I must concur with my college.
Don't give in to DVD2ONE, that leads to the dark side.
