I have just bought a SONY DVD DRU-510A. However nero will not recognise it. It shows up in drivespeed and cd speed but not in the actual app. How do I go about this ?

If Nero came bundled with another drive, it's probably been restricted to use with that manufacturer's kit due to licensing issues.
You might need to get in touch with Ahead and ask them for a new license for use with the new drive.
Alternatively, make sure you've got the latest version in case the one you are using came out before the drive, and therefore doesn't know about it. -
In windows explorer if I right click on my cd-r under properties it says "enable drive for writing" and this is checked on my dvdr it is not.
What is this all about ? -
Also if I uninstall and then re-install Nero will it recognise the dvdr ?
-
Since you're using XP, that option for enabling writing is referring to XP's own (ie read Roxio's) CD writing capability. It shouldn't have any bearing on the DVD.
Are you sure your version of Nero is recent enough to know about the drive ? Can you confirm that you've got the full (retail) version and not a manufacturer specific license ? -
Yeah I think I have the full reatil version, do you think uninstalling and then re-installing will work ?

Hardcore,
If you have a full version, you should have a serial # on the disk's sleeve, has to be used for install.
If you have an OEM, as I did get with a 16X years ago ( a couple, anyhow ), and try to use it with any other device, it will tell you it is specific to that device.
Open Nero and click on Help>About Nero, and see what version you have. If it's old enough, it may not have your device in its database.
Either way, you should go to Nero.com and DL the latest version, 5.10.42, I believe was the last before the release of 6.0.
6.0 was badly made and has already been replaced with 6.1, or something.
If you do have an OEM disk, it may tell you to go to your device maker for updates.
edit: I didn't make the urls above, the reply form did. Is this normal? -
Poopyhead,
No, the serial number allows you to install to any drive. The disk that came with my 16X liteOn would only load with that drive installed, even though my other drives are 40 and 48X LiteOns. The disk with the install code will install on the 16X.
When I tried to use the OEM disk, it flashed a message that it was only for that specific drive, the one it was packaged with.
Kinda similar to a restore disk that will tell you it is only for use with an HP, whatever, computer. Checks the BIOS, refuses to install, no serial needed.

i brought a aopen dvd burner for $279.00 last december with Nero 5.5 which was only suppose to operate that burner for my wife's computer and it had no serial (it didn't recognize her cd burner )
before this i didn't even like Nero. for no reason really
as i had 2 Nero cds that came with cd burners and i never installed them
i install the Nero software on my computer with my old sony dru 120a +r/rw($550.00). suprisingly it recognized it. but not my cd burner
i finally got the serial code. it gave me the full versions and it recognized my cd burners too. i also upgrade to the latest Nero version 5.5.10 something
then in february, i brought a pioneer a04 or a05 ($249.00 with $50 rebate) it came with Nero 5.5.9.14 with a serial code with it. i was pissed as it seems the cheaper i spend on a dvd burner, the better software i get .
needless to say i sold that pioneer for $500 (that included me giving the guy instantcopy, SmartRipper and IfoEdit and showing him how to burn dvds)
i kept that Nero software and it recognized all of my drives automatically and was a full version
if you paid extra for that last upgrade
i would demand my money back because if you already had a serial code
you are suppose to have a full version automatically and if it didn't recognized that pioneer burner
you should've had free updates to make it reconize that pioneer -

It doesn't matter, actually a " feature ", as MS would say.
I always copied and pasted before this. I kinda like it. -
